Mua- Required and Pre-paid "gratuity"

Veronica, on April 25, 2019 at 11:07 AM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 13

I am getting married in June 2020 and I've gotten all the major vendors picked out for the most par, so now I am looking for HMUA. I am very picky about my makeup because I have sensitive skin and I am actually pretty good at doing my own makeup. And so I want someone who can do my makeup better than me but not pageant-y or too glam. Apparently this puts me pretty squarely in the $400–$500 range (which strikes me as pretty high already). But then these MUA tell me that they require 18%–20% "gratuity" on top of my $400–$500 bill 2 weeks before they even do the work. And it seems like a good 2/3 of HMUA are doing this now. They all say it's so they don't have to charge me a fee for this or that, but that's what that is: It's a fee. It is required and due before the person even begins the work. That's a fee. Gratuity is something you voluntarily give for services rendered where those services are done well.

And the thing that really makes me upset, I understood before I even started looking for a HMUA that I would need to make sure I had an extra $100-ish to tip with--but I thought that was because I was handing cash directly to an artist who: showed up on time, was friendly, finished on time, listened to any requests for corrections, and generally did a fabulous job. With required "gratuity" I am not even sure who is getting that money (if it's going to the woman who actually will help me or what). And at that point, I will have pre-paid $600 for makeup per a binding contract and so the HMUA artist(s) know now that if they are late, not particularly friendly, refuse to change things if I don't like it, etc. it makes no difference because they already have their "gratuity" and aren't expecting anything extra.

So my question is: Is this the norm now? Am I the only one who finds this upsetting/frustrating? Because no other vendor has done anything like this--not even the caterers (the people who should basically be entitled to a tip since they are serving food to 150 people). I cannot imagine how or why this started but is this a thing everywhere? And is everyone but me okay with paying this? Am I just not understanding something about the industry or. . . ?

Yikes! Is that $400-500 only for you alone? That seems really, really high. I paid a little less than $300 for just me, and that included gratuity.

If nothing else, what I learned from my wedding is to stay away from the vendors that include gratuity in their contracts. I thought it would be easier to not have to worry about it, but after our shuttle debacle, I honestly wouldn't have tipped the driver anything - she disappeared for over an hour when she was supposed to be available the entire time she was hired for and we provided bathrooms, food and drinks for her to make sure she stayed on site.

That seems crazy to me.. the highest ranked salon neer me where I will be doing my hair and makeup is charging $95 for me and $85 for each of my girls. They have a contract but payment is not due until the service is over. If your attached to this HMUA then I say go for it but if not def try to find someone a little less expensive. As far as the gratuity, that sounds nuts! I will be tipping baised off the experience not the expectation of the job they will do

Yes ma'am, that is $400–$500 for me alone. It is just insane to me. I was expecting $300–$350 (and then tip) but these prices are way more than I think is reasonable. But all of the suggestions on this website are for HMUA that charge that much (at least, the first 7 I found that do makeup approximating what I am looking for). And my wedding planner seems to find the cost about the going rate. But it just strikes me as utterly unreasonable. IDK what I am doing wrong, so any tips for finding someone reasonable would be much appreciated lol

Oh and this is not just one HMUA--about 4 different ones (who already want $430–$500 for HMUA trial and day of) have this on their website or in their contracts

None of the vendors we hired we required gratuity as part of our contract, and I definitely wouldn’t have felt comfortable hiring someone who did.

I am finding really high prices as well, although the $500 I was quoted included: hair and makeup, trial and day of. So, at least that covers more. But I'm also seeing the required, up-front "gratuity" which is not a gratuity at all, by the standard definition. It's crazy.

If you're not already set on this person, you could search on Thumbtack. I've found some vendors there who are WAY less expensive for their services. Also, you may want to reach out to any Facebook wedding groups in your area, or even just put out a request for a recommendation from your friends group. I've seen other brides find more affordable options that way. Good luck!

Maybe you should ask some of your vendors if they know anyone. Specifically, you're photographer. They might have vendors that they have worked with in the past that they can recommend.

I’m in Phoenix, AZ and I paid $320 for airbrush (I have extra sensitive skin and the airbrush was wonderful) that included
hair, makeup, and my trail! No tip due before, I handed each of the makeup artist cash at the end (had 4 artist for all my ladies) it was $150 for each of my ladies hair and makeup

I'm in Denver, and I'm pretty picky about hair and makeup. I'd say over my lifetime, I've had my makeup professionally done around 20 times so I've grown to be extra picky & specific. I did two trials before booking (after going through 30 company reviews & pictures). One was $80 and one was $100. I didn't tip at either. The one I decided to go with doesn't require a tip at all, my HAMU is costing $240 (not including trial or travel).

That seems crazy. I'm paying $200 for my HAMU. I added gratuity in cash at my trial and will do the same on the day of the wedding.

Regardless of the price (which seems high and my wedding is in LA where prices are pretty high), required gratuity is not okay. I would ask if they can be flexible with that or find someone else.

My hair and makeup is costing $280 with bridesmaids being $150 for each girl. The gratituty is included in the invoice and the balance is due a month before the wedding. It is in the contract that they will not accept money the day of.

I have had other service vendors do this, but it is mainly transportation. I do not have a problem with it since it is one less thing I have to worry about now. I think the vendors that do it are the ones where you live in more of a hurry and this can be easily forgotten.

Iunderstand what you mean though by it should be based on their service. However, you also will be hiring them so you should make sure they are reliable, awesome, and worth the money. I went with my artist because they offer a bridal suite you can rent out and I do not have a place with the venue and did not want it to be a hotel room. Their reviews are awesome and I literally talk with the owner all the time. She is so sweet that even on top of the tip, I am going to get her a gift since she is going out of her way to make this special (offered a space for the groomsmen, gave us a really good deal on an Airbnb she has, etc.).
