mua travel etiquette

Jenine, on August 11, 2021 at 3:11 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 10

Hi Ladies!

I have a good friend that I've known for almost 20 years or so, she's a MUA in NYC. I was curious if I were to hire her for my hair and make up what is the etiquette for her travel expenses since our wedding is a destination wedding? Basically how much of her travel do are we expected to pay for, flight/hotel? I want to know in advance to not offend her for her services whether she takes our offer or not. Thanks in advance.

I think (not 100% sure) you would be expected to cover flight and hotel costs as well as paying for the make up itself. Alot of the make up artists I talked to required travel and hotel costs to be covered on top of paying for the appointment if the venue was over a certain distance away.

Yes you should pay for hotel and flight. If they need to rent a car I’d also pay for that. This is all on top of paying for the makeup service.

That’s what I thought but even if she’s invited to the wedding to be a guest?

I guess If she was coming as a guest anyway that changes it slightly. I’m not sure of the proper etiquette. I think if you’re hiring her for a service you should offer to pay for her service, hotel, and flight at minimum. She can always refuse your payment but at least you offered.

Typically, I would say you’d be responsible for her flight, two nights hotel (night before and night of the wedding) and her service fee. Even if she’s invited as a guest, you should still offer to pay her as if she were a vendor. She can always decline that offer.

I agree with this. Besides, you can't possibly offend a friend by offering to pay her, but you MIGHT offend her by not offering to pay. Is the friendship worth that risk?

Oh I intended to offer extra, just didn’t want to offer too much or too little.

If she's invited as a guest and would be attending, then I would say accommodation night before, plus whatever you'd pay for the makeup.

That is something you need to discuss with her. Typically when you hire destination vendors who need to travel, you are responsible for their travel expenses.
