MUA/Hair Trial Disappointment What To Do? Anyone ever do their own makeup?

RhnCasi419, on July 24, 2015 at 6:59 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 24

I spent $210 on my hair and makeup trial yesterday only to be extremely disappointed. The makeup was ok, except I hated the airbrush makeup on me and it didn't give me the

"magical" coverage the mua said it would. An hour after she left some of the airbrush had "magically" disappeared revealing the broken capillaries around my nose that I am so self-conscious of. My own makeup does a better job of covering and staying put (I use very high quality expensive makeup). The hair trial, in my opinion, was a disaster. I showed the stylist some inspiration pics (side style, curled, with some trendy twists) - all that was achieved were some curls that came out in an hour to the side, the back looked like a hot mess, sloppy. No twists. The hair stylist called it a "rough draft." For $85 tip, I was not expecting "a rough draft." With the wedding in 2 1/2 months, should I scramble to find someone else? I really can't afford to throw money away on another "trial." DIY hair & makeup?

Do you have any pictures of the make up and hair? Every time I have a disaster for hair, I go to someone else and explain it to them and they charge way less. Maybe try researching really well hair and make up people in your area and then calling them to explain what happened. Also go to that lady's boss and ask for your money back. With the pictures if you have them. I'm so sorry this happened to you.

Yes, I did take a couple of pictures. @lolsenn that is an idea taking the pics to someone else ... I did email their boss last night asking her for suggestions on what to do. The interesting thing is that the company originated in Connecticut has excellent reviews, in fact, they have the most reviews out of all the makeup and hair stylists on WW vendors (something like 70 reviews!), however, they just opened up a Boston (where I am from) location, and I believe all their stylists are new? That shouldn't matter though? UGhh Edited to add: I'm not expecting miracles but I have been following the company on Instragram and their Connecticut company has so many awesome before and after photos they post of women they have done of all ages.

Actually, the trial kinda IS a rough draft....sometimes it works out sometimes it doesn't. Not trying to twist this on you, but are you sure that the style and inspiration you were showing her worked for your hair type? Your hair will never look identical to what the photo shows, hell my hair didn't look exactly the same as the trial did and came out a lot different on the wedding day. As for the makeup, I have no idea. I loved mine and the coverage looked great. Can you speak to the stylist/owner about a second trial at a reduce rate?

To me a trial is different than a rough draft. A trial shouldn't come out sloppily. I've written a lot of "rough drafts" for college, although you can't compare to hair, to me, rough drafts don't involve a lot of effort. I think I was just disappointed in the sloppiness. I get that the "trial" is just what it is ... a trial ... which has room for some tweaking.

Maltese did you get airbrush makeup? I find it interesting that some people love it, others not so much. I guess I'm in the camp of not so much. So, I wait for the owner/manager of the company to email me back with any suggestions.

I did....for our E-pix I used "regular" and I wasn't a fan of it and didn't like it at all, so I knew I'd be using airbrush for the wedding. If you can get them to do another trial at a reduced rate, maybe ask them to use your own foundation as you like it so much and have such good results with it. I'd also start looking into other artists in your area as a safety net.

My normal hairstylist did my wedding hair. I had two trials, at over two hours and $100 EACH and they were both disasters. I realized that the style I was trying to force my hair into just did not work for me. Could this be the case? Maybe try a different hairstyle and see if you're more comfortable with it.

As far as makeup, airbrush should cover and last extremely well... look at my BAM! Everyone commented on my "porcelain" skin, and I can guarantee that is NOT what it looks like on a day to day basis! I think the MUA may not have done something right. When I went for my 2nd makeup trial (same girl, first trial was e-pics and she did a great job, I just wanted to try a different look) she realized she was out of the correct primer and the airbrush makeup wouldn't "stick".

I'd try a new trial before committing to DIY hair/makeup.

I have seen both BAMs Maltese & Jess! Both so incredibly beautiful!

Interestingly, the MUA yesterday did not use a primer! I was kind of surprised, but just figured you don't use primer with airbrush. I told her that I had 0 product on my face when she began. So so frustrating. I think I have to suck it up and go for another trial, either with the company I used yesterday or someone else. It is a little comforting knowing I am not the only one whose hair came out like a disaster on 1st try. The hair style I am seeking isn't really a difficult one. I have extensions so it shouldn't be that unachievable. Its just hair all to one side down with curls and some trendy twisty things. Nothing too complicated at all as long as you have the hair for it, which I did, with the extensions. It is the way it came out in the back and the side of my hair. Maybe I'll post the pic I have ...

I am doing my own hair and make up. It's just insanely expensive to get both professionally done, so, I went to sephora and treated myself to a bunch of Kat Von D make up which I love and I've been practicing a couple looks. My hair is simply going to be really curly.

I want to look like me!

I swear I could create this look myself. Smiley sad The curls had fallen out at this point when pic was taken, the side has no twisty things I asked for.

I agree that the trial should have come out a lot better. Also if the style didn't work with her hair and hair texture, I feel that a real professional hair stylist would have suggested a different style or tweaked it.

Or maybe it was just that stylist? Maybe try going to the same company just a different person?

Exactly lolsenn! I felt the same way, if it wasn't going to work, I was hoping with their professional expertise, they would have suggested something else, but they didn't. Its sloppy. NOT bridal. So frustrated.

What kind of twist things are you looking for? But I do agree that the hair does not look like you're describing!

Thank you! I loved my dress...it was everything I said I DIDN'T want when I started looking! :-)

She didn't use a primer at all? Weird?! Can you post an inspiration pic for us? For what it's worth, you still look beautiful. I know it's not the look you were looking for and are disappointed, (and out $&dollarSmiley winking, but you still look pretty! Did she curl with a flat iron, curling iron or wand?

I did my won hair and makeup for me E pics, and plan on doing my own makeup for my wedding, but have someone else do my hair. if you are good at your makeup, and you are confident in it, do it yourself. you dont HAVE to have a MUA do it. sometimes you are just as good if not better, because you work with makeup on your face every single day(or at least way more often than just twice) you know what works and doesnt on your skin and the colors and the eyeliners, etc.

You look gorgeous but I get how you would be upset. Have you considered having someone else do it? I wouldn't be able to do my own hair and makeup on my wedding day. Way too much to stress about and I feel like the smallest thing would set me off. Not to mention if I'm not happy with it on the day I would have her fix it until I was. You paid her a good chunk of money for a trial, can you get in touch with her and let her know you're not happy?

If the company was Bridal Entourage I would contact the owner. Before she got big, she did 2 of my friends weddings (I was MOH in one) and we all loved our hair and makeup. I know the owner cares about the name and quality of the company and would not be happy to hear you werent happy.

I did my own makeup and hair. I know what works and what I like.

I have those capilary things around my nose too.

sounds like you like what you do on your own, then do it! Smiley smile my mom told me how she went to get her hair done before a dance, then ended up washing it all out and doing it herself because she liked it better.

if your gut is telling you to do it yourself, then do it! nothing wrong with that.

a woman I knew got a gift card from a friend to have her makeup done before her wedding. they put green stuff all over her face and went with bright colors that made her feel all over done. I wish she'd had pictures of it because she described it this way "I looked like a dead hooker"

she washed it all off, did her make up herself and everyone went on about how the store did such a great job. she had to tell some in private that wanted the make up artists name how she did the makeup herself so the friend that gave the gift wouldn't feel bad.

She doesn't sound too professional. And $210 for a trial is A LOT!! my friend who is a "high end" MUA/stylist charges $150 for a trial. I would keep looking, as you still have time.

Considering I got some more replies on this I will give you an update. After leaving the owner a message telling her I was disappointed and worried - she called me back in just over 24 hours. They want to make the customer happy. They are offering me another free trial with a different hair stylist, same mua. She even slipped by saying she would schedule me with a "stronger" hair stylist. She said her mua was one of the senior artists ... I mentioned that I thought she skipped the primer ... In any event, they are offering me another trial ... free. So, I'll take it!

Thanks for the honest opinions and the generous compliments.
