Dedicated November 2018

Multi-ethnic bridal party

Aja, on March 15, 2018 at 8:31 AM Posted in Hair and Makeup 1 16

So, I'm a bride to be! Yay! lol My wedding is scheduled for November 9th and I'm trying to find a hairstylist/makeup artist to do a trial run, and (hopefully) book for the wedding. Problem is, I'm having a little difficulty finding someone who can accommodate my bridal party. I'm African-American and plan on getting a sew-in (hair extensions), my matron of honor is Caucasian, my sister has dreadlocks, and my mother has short natural hair. It seems like everyone I find only has experience working with one hair type. It's a nightmare! We could all go to separate places, but I really don't want to go down that road. Especially if someone is running late at their particular salon. I guess the makeup won't be too bad as long as they have a variety of shades. Has anyone else had this problem?! What did you end up doing?

Honestly I would go with a black stylist, someone who can do natural hair well. If they can do that there should be no problems for your MOH. What do your mom and sister wish to do with their hair? Is it complicated? The other issue is time, how long will these styles take?

My sister wants an up-do but she's adamant on using someone that has experience styling dreadlocks. My MOH says we should just use her salon but my wedding isn't the time to hope that someone can do a good job! Everyone knows that getting extensions are super expensive, especially when you factor in the cost of the hair! Doing a trial plus the day of will cost me around $500!

I'm not sure what my mother wants at this point Smiley winking . I was planning on getting the actual extensions done 2 days before the wedding and just have it styled the morning of.

Does your budget allow for multiple stylists to come to you (maybe in a hotel suite)?

We had multiple stylists come to us based on what we wanted done with our hair and makeup.

I second this! I’m in the same boat as you (I’m Black, matron of honor is white/Mexican, bridesmaids are white and black). Your best best is to go with a black hair and makeup artists since they will likely have a wider range in terms of hair they’ve worked with.

If it were me I would tell my sister that she needs to show up styled. She clearly has a certain look she wants and I just wouldn't want to get caught up in hiring a person who disappointed her thus causing drama on your day. NOPE! I would tell my sister to figure it out. Does she live locally to the wedding? Regardless I would tell her she's on her own. I totally get why she wants what she wants, the the pressure should not be on you to figure it out.

No, don't use the MOH salon. I personally would find someone you are comfortable with. And let them know, if they choose to opt in thats on them. Let them know what time to meet you at the hotel suite/venue and call it a day.

I'm natural and so is my sister, so that was easy. My mom has thin hair that she's super picky about so she's coming styled. No BP for me.

I would say you can offer your stylist's services, and if people do not want to use her then they can make their own arrangements. This is one of those times you can't please everyone and you just need to do what works for you.

My MOH is black so I asked my MUA about her experience with darker skin tones and she sent me a link to more of her portfolio. I still gave MOH the option to make her own arrangements. She will be getting her makeup done at the salon and is TBD on hair.

That's a good idea! Especially since we also have completely different wants when it comes to our makeup. So far, this has been the most stressful part of the planning process!

You should call some salons and just ask if they have expiring weeks with different ethnicity hair styles.
    Youre wedding party sounds beautiful!

I'm letting all the girls go to their own stylist. I have a multi ethnic bridal party as well. I would hope the makeup artist could work with everyone's shade. That's a question i find i have to ask. As long as the girls make their appointments early enough and the stylist knows they have a wedding to attend they should be fine. Make sure they all give themselves lots of time.

I would hire someone with experience with different hair types, and makeup. I know the struggle-it took me 4 months to find a MUA, and 5 months for a hairstylist. My mom is black, my MIL is Mexican, my skin is white (I really don't indentify with a race) so I needed people comfortable with different races, and had the right products. I Ended up hiring Latina artists for our comfort.

My MOH mentioned us going to separate stylists as well if all else fails, but I'd really like to stay together as a group. I don't want to be on my own the morning of my wedding! Am I overreacting?
I forgot to mention that the flower girl is mixed race and has very curly hair! So many different hair types/needs!

Don't be. My is a multi-race bridal party. My sister is a cosmetologist and she's my matron of honor. It's a win win, but we are sister's and I'm the youngest. I'm picky! It will be beautiful, no worries. Just envision it the way you would like.
