Munich Oktoberfest Honeymoon?

I've been brainstorming honeymoon ideas, and the one I've been thinking about most is Munich for Oktoberfest. My fiance and I are part of a German dance group, and he's always wanted to go. I've never planned a trip outside of the US, so this would be a whole lot of new. I'm wondering two things: 1)...

I've been brainstorming honeymoon ideas, and the one I've been thinking about most is Munich for Oktoberfest. My fiance and I are part of a German dance group, and he's always wanted to go. I've never planned a trip outside of the US, so this would be a whole lot of new.

I'm wondering two things:

1) Has anyone been to Munich Oktoberfest? Any tips or must-sees?

2) Does anyone have advice for planning a trip abroad? I've been looking at prices for 2018, though we would go in 2019 (flights/hotels aren't available that far out), but any reputable travel sites other than expedia would be welcome!

Thanks in advance to anyone who has any advice Smiley smile

DH and I did a ten day Euro trip last year. Flew into Frankfurt (for free on airline points) and stayed there one day. Next day flew to Milan (45mins) and took a bus (1 hour) to Lugano, Switzerland. This is a must! So gorgeous and a hidden gem. We hiked and went zip lining on the Swiss PreAlps and stayed at the Hotel Continental which is budget friendly, has amazing views, and delicious food. Spent three days there then bussed and flew back to Milan for a day. I didn't do much research in Milan since we were only using it as a stop over but there was nothing there.

Then came the fun part; Oktoberfest! We flew to Munich (1 hour) and split a hotel with two other friends from home who met us there, where 4 of us crammed in one room. This was fine because it was only two days, we were walking distance to the festival and were going to be drunk anyways Smiley smile The festival is unlike anything in the US. I highly suggest going midweek. We never booked a reservation and didn't have much trouble finding a table.

After the festival we spent another three days in Munich at a hotel further away doing the touristy stuff. Munich has so much charm!

On our way home we had an 8 hour layover in Reykjavic, Iceland that we were able to take the bus downtown to walk around and such.

As far as booking, I did it all myself. My husband calls me the travel agent! I spent countless hours googling and searching for the best deals and alternative ways around. I def believe booking midweek and traveling midweek are cheaper. Also, for some reason I noticed that when you fly one way in Europe is it usually more expensive than round trip. This is advised against by the airlines but we booked round trip tix then didn't show up for the return trip. It saved hundreds. Also, we are no stranger to public transportation so that helped the budget. I like TravelZoo for cheap fare finder. too.I hope this helps!

So many great tips!! My original thought was to just explore Munich, but I'm definitely going to need to look into these nearby places y'all have suggested!

I'm also curious about budgets... I want to figure out how much I need to save up, any ballpark ideas from you experienced travelers?

Total it was about $5,000. We both had a free flight to Germany using airline miles, flew back to MA on Iceland Air which is budget friendly and did lots of research on the hotels to get a good deal. I think I booked everything on Expedia.

ETA: Public transportation is your friend if you are looking to save some money! We didn't rent a single car there and made it around just fine.

We could have probably gotten away with spending closer to $3,500 but when we're on vacation we like to spend and do, eat, and drink whatever we want. Good luck!

We went in 2016 and it was amazing!! I booked the hotel through spyglass tour agency, and 100% reccomend them. It's a company based out of NC, and it's a husband and wife team that goes yearly. Dinner and one drink in a beer tent was included in the package, one drink at the first dinner, breakfast daily, along with a free walking tour, and Munich Transit pass. The hotel we stayed at was Motel One Sedlinger Tor (very nice despite the name). It's where a lot of the locals stay.

If you go, go during the beginning of Oktoberfest to see the parades they have. Any day you go get there early, and I mean like 9:30 am, otherwise the beer tents are full by the time they officially open at 10 am. You can buy beer prior to 10 am. I think they start letting people in at 9 am. The Hacker Pschorr Tent was amazing, and Lowenbrau was cool. You can't go wrong in any tent. If you're a vegetarian or vegan they also offer those types of foods. Also buy the outfits, it's worth it. If you're a history buff do a tour of Dachau, it's a half hour train ride away. Salzburg is a 2 hour train ride away, and a gorgeous city. Also doing a castle tour was very cool. Just be ready to walk a lot! So take comfy shoes.

Regarding flights, we flew Iceland Air and prices were very reasonable for flying to Europe.

Thanks, Annie! I'll have to look into that travel company. Luckily, we already have multiple sets of outfits, so we won't need to spend too much on that (though I'd love to get another dirndl anyway haha). How close was your hotel to the fest?

@Mary A. It was walkable they said, but it was literally one train stop away, then 2 blocks away. They had signs all over so you couldn't miss it. It's where everyone got off too! Everyone spoke English as well, so that wasn't a problem.

Also, the hotel was extremely close to other historical and touristy sights of Munich. It was 3 stops from the main train station.

That sounds awesome! I'd definitely want to find something walkable to Oktoberfest because I assume it'll be much easier to travel to other sights that'll be spread out anyway.
