Music Ideas for those metal inclined

wesgerrr, on February 4, 2016 at 10:22 PM Posted in Planning 1 12

I'm going to be "DJ" for my own wedding (putting a playlist on an iPod and having father in law play music at certain times). My fiancé and I pretty much listen to exclusively metal and hard rock, and we hate cheesy romantic songs. (We love Led Zeppelin, STP, NIN, Tool, Metallica, etc.). I've even joked about having "We're In This Together Now" by NIN as our first dance. Any tips for songs that won't scare the pants off our older or more conservative guests? We are having a non traditional wedding.

If having people get up and dance is important to you, you might not be able to stick to a purely metal/hard rock playlist. I would probably just look up party playlists online and mix your choices in with their suggestions.

Also, I love All My Love by Led Zeppelin. Could be a good choice for the ceremony or first dance or something.

Five finger death punch has some pretty good covers of older classic songs which might be more familiar for your guests (and still have a harder rock sound)...Actually I can't really think of any of FFDP's music that I don't like.

Check out Vitamin String Quartet - they do classical covers of contemporary music. You'll probably like their rock stuff.

Apocalyptica! Our first dance will either be fade to black or nothing else matters. I think this band for the elderly is great. They hear something nice but you know it's just a kick ass cover for a kick ass band.

Honestly, just know that this is likely to make people leave very early. It's one thing if it's a song here or there. But if its the majority of the playlist people are likely to head for the hills unless they happen to share you exact music taste. Really this is a place where you have to decide which is more important-playing your favorite music, or having people stick around for more than a song or two. My DH and I went to a wedding once where they played nothing but country. Plus a lot of it was things that only real country fans would know as opposed to sticking to more accessible options. We ended up leaving early because we couldn't dance to any of it and weren't enjoying ourselves. The couple was dancing and clearly liked the songs, but there was a pretty decent percent of the crowd sitting out and people started leaving much sooner than you would normally see. Realistically, if you want a crowd to stick around you need music that appeals to a larger group.

I'm having this exact same problem! I personally am not into music very much so I just listen to what the hubs listens too which is only metal and stuff like that. he does like some slower stuff which is helping me out a ton (modest mouse is his recent favorite but nothing will ever top slayer or lamb of god) We are having our main songs having a rock vibe. there are a ton of bands who do classic, old school or slow song covers. for example, for the mother of the groom and grooms first dance, he picked simple man, but by deftones. for the dance with my dad and I, I am doing changes by Kelly Osbourne and ozzy. we will be fading out certain parts of that song though. but for our guests, we will be playing dance music too. no taylor swift or anything like that, but more old school fun music. so I would just highlight your playlist with your metal options.

Metahead here!! I second Zelda's and Randee's suggestions. Check out the covers by Vitamin String Quartet, especially the "goth wedding" collection, and some of the softer songs by Apocalyptica. Also, we danced to "Thank You" by Led Zeppelin - the original version, not a cover.

I agree with people about not having JUST rock and metal. I also hate cheesy songs, but we had some 80's and 90's pop songs that were fun to dance. Think Michael Jackson, The Cure, Queen...

I think the very important thing about wedding playlists (If you want everyone to stay, dance, and have a good time) is that they can not just be a collection of your favourites. It is really important that they be all around crowd-pleasers and songs that most people know. Yes, its your day, but you want everyone to enjoy themselves. Just my two cents! I can imagine a lot of people wanting to duck out unless everyone is into that kind of music. If people aren't dancing and enjoying the atmosphere, they won't want to stay long.

My future hubby and I are the same way, and also making our playlist for the wedding day. We are playing a lot classic rock mixed with songs we like that will still appeal to a lot of our guests, Really I think it depends on the crowd you have invited to your wedding as to what kind of music should be played. For me, our families will enjoy a solid classic rock and 80's/90's throwback music. Plus, our crowd really aren't big dancers so we have a lot of other activities planned for our guests. Music is really more for ambiance for us. I say just make a solid mix with a little of everything, and then go with music you and your fiance enjoy for those important moments.
