Music

How do you pick a song to walk down the aisle to, should it be a song you both like, one that means something to the two of you, ect.... also how do you pick music for the reception? The music me and HTB enjoy music that is way different from what our guests will enjoy. I get that we need to keep this in mind but how do you go about making a playlist that everyone enjoys? I do plan on adding a song suggestion on the RSVP'S so that we can make sure everyone has at least one song they like and can get out and shake there thing. I also am not sure that if alot a lot of our guests will even dance then what do we do? Help please!!!

    Hey Heather!

When it comes to choosing a song to walk down the aisle, there are no criteria. You should choose a song that you love, if it has a special meaning to you both as a couple, then even better. You could choose a song from your favorite band, if this would typically be not the style of music played at a wedding ceremony, perhaps you could look for an acoustic version of it?

It’s a great idea to ask your guests for song suggestions with their RSVP. You both obviously want to love the music being played at your wedding so you can definitely mix in your own choices. Are you DIYing your music for your reception, or are you hiring a DJ?

Choosing our music was my very favorite part of planning! For your ceremony, think about what type of vibe you want it to have. I want a super romantic and whimsical ceremony so I found artists that did covers of popular songs with piano, cello, and violin. Brooklyn Duo has great options. Are you having a cocktail hour? We decided to play music we like, but isn't really dancing music, during our cocktail hour and dinner. For dancing music I picked popular songs mixed with old and new so everyone has something to enjoy.

We had to pick a song for each of us to walk down the aisle to. My pick was instant and easy, hers not so much. I have always loved Ingrid Michaelson and her version of Can't Help Falling In Love was perfect for us and our love story. She initially wanted Believe It Or Not because kitchy 80s TV show aside, the words are beautiful. We couldn't find a decent cover that dropped the cheesiness so she just grabbed an Ed Sheeran song she likes, Tenerife Sea. We both approached the songs we walked to by thinking of what we had to say about approaching that moment. She even incorporated the theme of the song into her vows. We also chose to play I Get To Love You by Ruelle as guests sat and our officiant walked out because we felt it set the tone and said a lot about how we both feel.

As for the reception, popular is a good way to get people dancing but we also added a few songs we just really loved, especially toward the end of the night. Our cocktail/dinner music was a lot of acoustic covers of songs we love and it's the playlist I may have received the most compliments on. I even found a cover of I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) by Sleeping At Last that was perfect for a wedding.

I think if you find something that moves you, it will be beautiful for the ceremony no matter how well known it is. A good mix works for any reception. Happy planning!

I pretty much chose our ceremony songs based off of feeling. When I felt chills...I just knew they were perfect. I did have my FH listen and he felt chills for one too. I never had a wedding my first go round but he has so he’s letting me take the lead. I also second Brooklyn Duo.
