My caterer ate the food

Dena, on November 26, 2023 at 8:29 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 6
I had a small wedding rehearsal for my son catered. My first time hiring a caterer myself so not sure of the etiquette. Based on the menu of salad, shrimp cocktail, Brunswick Stew & grilled cheese, they said they would not need arrive too early to get everything prepared & they arrived about 2 hours prior to the 5:30 seating time. Everything was ready on time & delicious. My question is I came into the kitchen during the meal to grab the champagne for a toast & the entire crew of approximately 8 people were standing in the kitchen with loaded plates eating the food. At the end of the night, I was told the leftovers were in the fridge but there wasn't much because everyone (as in my guests) ate so much. I did not reply to that at the time because I am not sure if it's normal & expected that the Catering crew is going to eat your food or not. I would expect it if it had been an all day affair, but from arrival to cleaned up & gone was a total of 4 hours. And I would not have batted an eyelash at snacking on the food but they all had loaded plates & then blamed lack of leftovers completely on my guests as if the 8+ people they fed had no effect. If this is normal, I'll let it go but it's really bugging me

I have always been told it is proper to feed staff if the event is during dinner time. Since they were there from 3:30-7:30, that falls during dinner hour. So personally, this wouldn’t bother me.

It might have only been 4 hours, but it was right across dinner time. It would be customary to provide plates.

Since the event was scheduled during dinner time then yes I would have expected them to eat as well.

It is typical for the vendors to each have a full/regular portion, especially if the event was during a meal time/ dinner hour.

This doesn't really have anything to do with your question but I'm curious, if it was a small wedding rehearsal, why where there eight staff? I've seen eight catering staff handle very large events so I'm curious how many guests you had and what the serving style was (plated? family-style? stationed? buffet?). Thanks!

It's not universal to feed the catering staff at an in home catered event. While I certainly don't think it's unreasonable for all the reasons people have said, they should have at least advised you of this or had it in your contract.

Yes I agree, although it's pretty common for catering staff to be able to eat, if it was in the contract that would have cleared this up beforehand and you would have known what to expect.
