My Cheating Calligraphy

MrsO, on February 23, 2012 at 12:57 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 53

Thanks to Rachel showing me the thread that Labake posted (https://www.weddingwire.com/wedding-forums/im-feeling-devious-found-happy-medium-between-calligraphy-and-the-printer/44a4dd5a3e92bb7d.html) about using your printer to help with calligraphy, I gave it a go.

I wanted something more personal than just printing on the envelopes, and definitely didn't want to use labels. While I have "neat" handwriting, I don't have "fancy" handwriting so I decided this would be great to try out.

My envelopes are light blue (although they often don't look that way in the photos) and I printed very lightly on them with a color very close to the envelope color. Then I went over all of the words with a gold metallic gelly roll pen (love!). I am very pleased with how they came out. So far I have done all of my rsvp envelopes and my inside envelopes (50 each). I'm still waiting on my outside envelopes to arrive (I ordered them late as I wasn't planning on doing inside/outside) so that I can do them

It looks really good. I think the metallic pen looks very good. I"m trying to motivate myself to get this started

WOW! I wish I would have stumbled upon that before I hand wrote in my crappy cursive writing (although everyone says my handwriting looks nice)

Thanks guys Smiley smile I love them and the gel pen works excellently with this method. The ink is opaque so you cant see what you are tracing and it glides very smoothly making it easy to trace.

Kris, the font is HenryMorganHand You can download it from here (or plenty of other font sites) http://www.scrapvillage.com/fontsh.htm

Thanks! I'm trying the "light box" technique with my pyrex and some flameless candles. My envelopes come in the mail today. I'll let you know how it goes!

I tried the lightbox idea first but my linen envelopes were way too thick to work. We have a glass coffee table that I was going to use, however no matter how bright of a light I used, it couldn't make me be able to see through the envelope in order to trace.

I must say, the most frustrating part of this was feeding the envelopes through my printer which it did not want to take more than half of the time.

When I tried this technique, I used a fine point pen which left a narrow margin for error. Also, I could see what I was tracing so I had to go back over it then it just looked gross.

Yea, I felt like the gel pen was plenty thick enough to cover up what I was tracing. Also if I was inaccurate when tracing and had the thicken my line, the ink blends really nicely together when I go back next to it. So rather than looking like 2 lines, they blend perfectly into just a thicker line. I could imagine a finer tip pen making it more difficult.

Also after doing 100 envelopes of all the same font, I have become very in tune with tracing the letters so it got a lot easier.

Those look fantastic! I showed FH the original thread about this and we got to talking and want to try it with purple metallic since our colors are black, red and purple. I wasn't sure how it would turn out without using a calligraphy pen, but this gives me hope! I just have o make sure I have a couple of practice envelopes.

Oh man! Why didn't I see this sooner? That's what we did on SuperBowl Sunday. Addressed envelopes--using my crappy block printing. That is a great idea!
