My DIY Cathedral Veil!

tjacob2014, on January 4, 2016 at 9:04 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 18

So so happy!! The veil I tried on in the bridal salon was $550, so that wasn't happening. It was a one tier cathedral veil with beaded lace appliqués on the bottom edge that got slightly smaller as it went up the edge. So my mom and I decided to by $35 worth of beaded lace appliqués off of Etsy, and $6 worth of tulle and try it ourselves. So far, it took us two days to hand sew the appliqués onto the tulle (and to cut them and rearrange them so it starts out big and gets smaller toward the top). We still have to trim to corners of the tulle off to round out the bottom, and attach the comb, but the hard part is over I'm super happy with the results!

Thanks! @DRGCAS it's just plain tulle on the top (we haven't attached the comb yet I was literally holding it to my head where the comb would be). I have so much beading at the top of my dress that having any embellishments at the top of my veil would've have been too much.

That's beautiful! I think veils are one of the most over priced wedding accessories. Good for you.

Here's a pic of the one from the bridal salon with my dress. That's what the top will look like, except that the lace starts at my hips instead of that far up.

Thanks @Swole ! Honestly my dad surprised me by paying for the dress, and we got it for 66% of the original price, we could've afforded the veil. But something about paying $550 for a piece of tulle REALLY bothered me.

Wow, it's beautiful and is almost identical to the one from the store! Are you and your mom good with sewing in general? I ask because I'm not gifted in the art of sewing, but would love to make my own veil. Just wondering if there's more to it than just buying the tulle and any appliques and hand sewing them on. You said you still need to round out some of the edges, I wouldn't even know how to do that, so maybe I shouldn't be thinking about making my own! Lol

    Thank you all so much!

@love4slife, my mom is pretty good at sewing but it's honestly not that hard at all (just super tedious depending on the amount of lace) and there's tons of DIY pages on google.

All I meant be round out the edges is literally cutting the corners of the tulle on the bottom with scissors to be round instead of square. We bought 5 yards of tulle (cathedral veils are about 3 yards), and sewed the appliqués right on to it. Now we can cut the bottom shape round by following the lace, and cut any excess off of the top to get it to the right length. Finally, you just gather the top and sew it to a metal or plastic comb depending on your preference. If you use clear thread like we did it really disappears and you can't see it.
