My DIY Light Up Coffee Filter Flower Centerpieces

Angela, on August 23, 2014 at 4:39 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 28

Here is my latest DIY wedding project. Been working on these with my bridesmaids, dying and punching coffee filters and I've about hot glued my fingerprints off!

The bases are Skurar candle holders from IKEA painted silver, and the matching Skurar plate, lovingly spray painted by my FH.

I'm really proud of these. My inspiration was Zipper 8's lighting product which used to be on Etsy. Sadly they were $185 for a set of three and there was no way we could afford them. http://indulgy.com/post/IMzbm7WT52/coffee-filter-flower-centerpiece-zipper-lighting.

So I set out to make my own. Really happy with how they turned out!

Pictures 3 and 4 show them lit.

    @Sarah

    I used RIT dye to colour the coffee filters. (The flat cone No. 4 size)

    Then you have to dry the filters. The easiest way is to put them in the washing machine on Spin cycle and in the dryer for 5 minutes on low. Then the filters have to be ironed flat. (I know. Weird, but works GREAT.)

    Each ball uses a different scrapbook punch shape. I used an EK Tools punch because they work the best. One is a scalloped circle, one is a 5 point petal shape and the other is a shell shape.

    Once I had the shapes punched out, I glued them to a clear glass christmas ornament. (The kind that have the silver part with a wire loop on the top. So when you pull off the silver hanger top, there a hole to access the inside of the ball.

    I glued them Kindergarten style, by wrapping the punched shape over the end of a pencil, adding hot glue, and pressing on to the glass, until the whole shape is covered.

    The one that looks like a cabbage is a bit different, starting a the top and overlapping the petals as it goes down around the ball.

    Then I bought strings of battery pack LED lights on eBay. Most of the string of lights goes in the ball through the hole. a few lights stick out the bottom to light the candle holder. I have tulle inside the holder to hide the battery pack.

    The LED lights aren't hot, and they stay lit for a really long time. My test was over 14 hours without fading. The battery packs use either 2 AA or 3 AA batteries. The big balls have 20 string 3 AA lights, the small ball has 10 light string 2AA lights.

    Hope this gives you an idea of the process...

    That is so cool!!! How many filters did each glass ball need? And where did you find clear glass ornaments this time of year? Smiley laugh

    @KimS it probably takes 100 filters (totally guessing) to do the set of three. Each filter yeilds 6 punched shapes so depending on the size of the ball it can use more or less. The big fluffy ball uses the most, and I bet there's 50 filters in that one alone. I never really counted because we did them at different times.

    The glass balls I got from Michaels and Hobby Lobby, on clearance at the end of last year. I noticed today that Michaels has all their Christmas stock of clear ornaments in the store ready for Christmas.
