My fiance and me could be fired over taking a honeymoon!

I was recently hired with my fiance, only in a different field than him. His bosses knew we'd both need time off and one of them even suggested we'd NEED to take off 3 weeks to really enjoys ourselves and have a great time. I was recently hired with my fiance, only in a different field than him. His bosses knew we'd both need time off and one of them even suggested we'd NEED to take off 3 weeks to really enjoys ourselves and have a great time. So we have a big honeymoon planned and wanted to take 3 weeks off at least. Now that a few months have past since the original conversation his boss has said to him: "That doesn't sound reasonable, what you should do is get an all-inclusive deal for 5 days somewhere so you only have to take a week off total," AND, "I've seen people be let go for less. You take off for that length of time and sometimes the company realizes everything works alot smoother with you gone. You could come back from your honeymoon and not have your job anymore." He also suggested that if we were serious about taking more than a week off that we'd need to fill out a sabbatical and request the time off. We've got 10 months till our wedding, what do we do? This is a once in a lifetime deal!

My FH is taking 2 weeks and 2 days off but it his accrued.time, and he didn't the any vaca all year leading up to this. Normally he would never be able to take 2 wks off in a row. But, he has been with the company for 17 yrs, and they know this is a special reason. Myself, I work from home. I do freelance legal administration and make my own hours/my own boss. I told my clients ealier this year that I won't be available for 3 wks. The week of the weddi g and the 2 week honeymoon . Yes if they said it would be ok before and now are Changing their minds on it that is playing games .... and this is why I love working for myself.

I am taking two weeks, a full 80 hours but mine was approved from my boss and I will have well over 100 hours in pto by the time my honeymoon comes around. Unfortunately we have to play by the boss's rules unless we are the boss. Smiley winking

I'm taking 3 days before the wedding and 2 weeks after for the honeymoon, so a total of 13 days. However, that is time that I've accrued because I've been saving my PTO since I got engaged. Starting a new job around a wedding is always risky for that reason--you can't count on them making an exception for you, especially if you're new and don't have as much of a proven track record in your job. It sucks, but I wouldn't do anything that will jeopardize your employment in order to take a longer honeymoon. Can you schedule it around a holiday weekend to stretch the time out a bit more, even if it means you don't take the honeymoon right after the wedding?

I have to earn my vacation time. I get 4.44 hours a month. That's it. In 1 year I won't even have enough vacation time to take a week off. Unless someone's out for medical reasons, I've never heard of anyone being approved for 3 weeks off within the first year of getting hired on.

Yeah I definitely wouldn't risk it...but it really sucks that the policies aren't clear.

I actually took off a full month for my wedding and honeymoon. But...I'm a grad student. I get paid as a research assistant and we're given a full month off every summer. Just as long as I get my shit done and solve the mysteries of the universe I get paid. But...I'm an unusual case, I also can't get fired really. I suppose I could get kicked out of the program if I do something really bad, but that's it. However, I took 11 days for a honeymoon and it was plenty. By the end I was ready to be at home and get back to normal life. Three weeks can be tiring after you've had your wedding.

I don't understand the need for three weeks. We're actually going back to work two days after the wedding and taking a delayed honeymoon, which will not be longer than a week. Shit happens. Your job/financial stability has to be top priority.

American Vacation policies blow and no mandatory paid maternity leave. But yea, I had to be at my job 3 years to get 3 weeks vaca and to get more than that, you have to be there like 10 years. I only get 3 sick days a year no matter the seniority so I'm not surprised by this. :/

Just shorten the HM to a week. If not, you may not be taking a vacation for a very long time. You have to choose your battles and this one is not worth it. Its not like the boss is saying don't take a vacation at all, just not one that is too long.

Companies have vacation policies, so you need to check into what yours is. You should have been told that when you hired in. My company hires in with two weeks vacation. 3 weeks at 3 years and 4 weeks at 5 years. We can take those weeks all at once or break them up during the year. But approval can be dependent on company needs if its the busy time of year or others have also planned their vacation times as well.

If your FH has three weeks vacation time, and you have three weeks vacation time then take a three week honeymoon. If you don't have three weeks of vacation saved, well take a shorter honeymoon. Can't take vacation time you don't have... least not at any company I've ever heard of, policies are policies. A pain at times but it is what it is.

I have never heard of a full time job allowing people to take weeks of unpaid vacation. At my job you have your vacation days and once they're done, you can't take anymore. Unpaid isn't an option. 3 weeks is excessive.

You have to check and see what the polices are at your workplace. I am taking 3 weeks off, one for the wedding and two for the honeymoon. However I have been saving my vacation time and had it approved in advance. I also worked to make sure everything is covered while I am gone. I do get 3 weeks vacation a year until I've been here for 5 years then I get 4 weeks. We start off with 3 weeks off. I also get 5 days off in lieu of overtime pay.

Also I know it's possible depending on the company. Our MOH and BM took a 3.5 week honeymoon to Thailand about 2 months after their wedding.

ETA: this thread is making me realize how lucky I am to work for the company I'm at. Starting off we get 2 weeks, and at your 2 year anniversary mark you get bumped to 3.

If you're a new hire taking 3 weeks off in the first year is.. seriously stretching it.

My coworker just took off 2 weeks. And 2 months before 1 week. But he's been with the state for like 12 years. And again- state. So we accumulate quiet a bit of time- and we have a fair number of people who will go back to their home countries for a month. but these people have been here for a LONG while.

Go for 10 days. 3 weeks is just asking way to much. My ex used to say- if they can live without you for 3 weeks- they are going to wonder why they need you at all.

You both were recently hired at the same company and want 3 weeks off? If I were your coworker I would be giving you some serious side-eye and would be washing my hands of helping you out. You have more than your boss to worry about.

We rarely allow for employees to take extended time off due to the burden it places on others in the workplace. When we do approve it, it is for people who have performed well and been with the company for an extended period of time. I have the time to take a longer HM, but chose to keep it at a week since my coworker will be covering. Keep others in mind that while you are out, they are doing your work

32 days annual holiday is pretty standard in the UK, but even then we're using maybe 12 of them at most for the wedding (travelling days, the actual wedding, a day off to go get the guys suited, registry paperwork, interview for passport, 2 work days for a long weekend kind honeymoon - errands that have to be done during office hours basically)

3 weeks in the first year of employment seems excessive and while, yeah, it's your wedding it'd be nice to get a little time off - if you don't have it accrued it may just be tough luck. Have a shorter honeymoon, hope they're willing to compromise or do it at a later date when you have more days accrued.
