My fiancee has his mother and father's last names, which one do i take?

Nayana, on July 22, 2021 at 7:06 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 3

Hi all! So my fiancee has a hyphenated last name, one is his mother's and the other his father's. I just recently learned that the latter surname is supposed to be the father's name, but his is the mother's. So now we're trying to figure out what my last name would be since I'll be taking his. Will mine be exactly what his is, the two hyphenated names, or will he pick one and go with that? I know there are no laws on such but we're looking for the most common thing to do since this is such a unique situation. We're not sure we want to have a lineage of hyphenated children LOL.

You may not like my answer but it really sounds like a personal preference between the two of you. Is it important to him to keep the same hyphenated name? If so, then you’d take that name - hyphenated and all. If not then sounds like a win-win situation on getting options for a last name. Good luck with everything.

I can't say which name you should pick but just from reading other posts about last names. . .it sounds like the simpler the better for things like travel and medical records purposes.

It's definitely a personal decision, so it's really hard to weigh in on. However, you will definitely need to check with your state/county to see what they'll allow. Some will allow you to choose basically whatever (Smith-Jones, Smith, or Jones), but some will only allow exactly what the name currently is (Smith-Jones only).
