My grandmother may have had a stroke :(

HRH Mags, on January 8, 2013 at 2:41 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 22

I got a call from my mother this morning and evidently my grandmother wasn't feeling well friday night. She went to bed and slept for 24 hrs. When she woke up she said she still didn't feel well and was really shaky. My grandmother said she thinks she may have had a stroke but didn't go to the doctor!!! My uncle lives with her, my aunt lives very close by...she has plenty of people that could have taken her (and SHOULD have) taken her to the Dr's this weekend. My mom didn't know about this until earlier today and is going to call them again tomorrow to try and convince them to go to the doctor. She lives in another state so nothing I can really do. My grandmother is 90 and is still very independent...but she does have some health issues and is losing her eyesight very rapidly now. I called her earlier and she called back and sounded ok on the message. A little loopy though, I assumed she had gone to the Dr's and was on drugs! So thats concerning me a lot!

Does this sound like a stroke? I don't really know any other details until tomorrow when I can call her again. I'm so worried about her Smiley sad

Don't worry! I can do nothing but to comfort you. I know your feeling. I have grandmother too, she has been 80 years old, I was brought up by her. I love her very much too. I think your grandmother must be ok!

My Grammy had a stroke when I was a freshman in HS, and it was fairly severe. She lost memories, some muscle control and her speech was garbled for quite a while. The most common signs of a stroke are weakness in the face or arms, one-sided paralysis, difficulty speaking or understanding simple things and a sudden, severe headache that isn't like any the person has had before. From what you have said, if she had a stroke, it was likely very, very minor, also known as a transient ischemic attack, or mini stroke. In that case, she does need to see a Dr ASAP because a small one can pave the way for larger, more severe strokes. Now, also keep in mind that there is a nasty bug going around right now that has been knocking younger people on their ass. Some of my friends have had it and have been behaving much the way you described. I can only imagine how it would be for someone her age.

Either way, a trip to the Dr is definitely in order, possibly the ER if it gets worse.

I will be keeping my fingers crossed for you and your Grandmother. It was very hard watching my beloved Grammy go through the first and subsequent strokes, getting worse each time until she passed. I sincerely hope you don't have to go through that!

    Thanks Ladies

I spoke with her this morning and she said she had a "tiny little I guess you could call it stroke" to qoute her. She has all the symptoms of a stroke but came to find out she didnt tell anyone until later. She just went to bed. She shouldnt even be driving because of her eye sight but I guess she felt well enough this weekend to drive herself to the beauty parlor to get her nails and hair done anyways. On the way home she said her legs turned to jelly and she didnt think should would even make it upstairs to her condo but I guess she did.

She said she would "probably" go to the dr's next time though but I don't believe her. The only way she will go is if someone literally forces her.My aunt did call her dr but he said at that point there was no reason to come in since she was doing better because she wouldnt consider letting them do an MRI.

Your grandma sounds just as stubborn as mine! I hope she's well, and I also hope I get to be a tough 90 year old woman someday!

The weak ones don't make it to 90. Glad she's doing better. Hopefully relatives closer in proximity to her stay on top of this.

Poor Grandma! She is trying so hard to keep her independance and obviously doesn't want to worry her family. Smiley sad

Hopefully, the uncle who lives with her will keep a close eye on her now and take her to the ER as soon as she has any other symptoms.

What Aiden said is so true "mini" strokes can definitely pave the way for more severe ones.

AND... the first few minutes after a stroke are the most important so please tell your Aunt & Uncle to pay very close attention to her and get her to the hospital ASAP.

Good luck to her and big hugs to you!!

Next time?? she should probably go now.. even if she was having "mini strokes", they could be a precursor to a major stroke. She needs to get checked out now before something bad actually does happen! Sorry Mags.. thinking of you and your grandmother.. Is there a doctor you could call for a house visit?? I don't know if many still do house calls, but they could quite possibly given her condition..

Yeah she does need to go now. However her thing is that she honestly is ready to die. She has already lost most of her friends and she is losing her sight pretty quickly now. I personally don't think she really cares if something happens or not. She doesnt want to be an "old lady" to qoute her. She actually still works part time though its volunteering, its doing what she use to do professionally, lol. They just made her retire finally after she came out of retirement like 5 times...budget cut backs, etc. She was working on her Phd up until a couple of years ago and only stopped at the end because she couldn't conduct the research on the computer! She already has several masters degrees so she said that would have to do!

She lives in a huge city right by a hospital, she could easily have assess to her doctor if she wanted. IDK why my uncle or aunt havent just taken her, I guess they just dont want to force her to do something she doesnt want. Its frustrating because its just dumb!

I can't believe her doctor told her not to come in. That's ridiculous.

She should go now but she sounds like my Grandma. She is 87, lost my Pop 9 years ago, all of her siblings are gone... She is just ready to go. She won't go to the doctor unless we really pester her, and she says things like "...if I make it to your wedding..." even though she is healthy as an ox right now.

Aaargh! I hate that! Why do old people have to claim to be defeated by old age when they still have so much life left!? my grandmother started giving away Christmas decorations and other "heirlooms" and I'm like WTF? you aren't dead yet, so stop it! (she really isn't that old either)

Lol she has been giving things away like the the last few years. She told me not to put china on our registry because evidently thats what I am inheriting from her...I scold her when she talks like that!

Her thing is that she has had to care for so many other family members...she doesnt want to be that "burden" on anyone. Regardless of her many accomplishments she thinks she still has been a failure too in some way. I try to talk with her about it but there isn't much reasoning with her. She likes to work and have a job to do and feels if she can't do that then whats the point. She is then a "burden" to everyone. So silly

Even if she hasn't had an actual stroke, the tymptoms she is exhibiting could be a precursor to one. She could be having a Transient ischemic attack

    Mini stroke; It is:

A transient ischemic attack (TIA) is when blood flow to a part of the brain stops for a brief period of time. A person will have stroke-like symptoms for up to 24 hours, but in most cases for 1 - 2 hours.

A TIA is felt to be a warning sign that a true stroke may happen in the future if something is not done to prevent it.

I'm sorry to hear about this hun. I was going to mention a TIA but Rowena beat me to it. I know it's frustrating. She sounds feisty which is always a good sign. Take solace in the fact that she is doing better than some people younger than her and that she is leading a long life. I'm sure she'll be okay and maybe you can persuade her to get checked out by her doctor.
