My Indian/south Asian brides:mehndi night

Monica, on April 6, 2021 at 11:10 AM Posted in Planning 0 10
For those of you that plan to get mehndi done, I have a question. So I dont have many Indian aspects to our wedding, we really cant afford it. I got mehndi for my bridal shower which was a year ago and originally wasn’t planning on getting it done for the wedding but now I think it would be nice to get mehndi for the big day.

I was wondering how are you scheduling your mehndi night? For my bridal shower we did it about 2-3 days before the party. It was just my family. But I would like to offer my BM to get mehndi this time too. But it would be on a weeknight, some ppl live a little far or get off late from work so I dont think a weeknight would be a good idea. Is the weekend before too far out? One week ahead of time would be ok right? So that the color hasnt faded and is still dark for the actual wedding day a week later.

I am getting my mendhi done a week before. It normally last up to 2 weeks so I think it is fine! Best of luck with everything

Yes for sure my mehndi started fading 2 weeks later, but I couldn’t remember what it looked like after 1 week. Thanks! I think its best for the whole group to schedule it for a Weekend. But unfortunately my sister wont be there Because she lives out of state. But at least she got to do mehndi with me for the bridal shower.

Sorry 1 more question. The basics for planning the mehndi party would be just: food, decorations, and the mehndi artists right? Anything else Im missing? It’s going to be a small party at home.

    That sounds perfect Monica!! ❤️

I'd also set up a playlist or two for background music!

Yeah, just some music! I am combining my mehndi and dohlki night together so I'm getting a dhol or too. Save money instead of two different nights!

It might be fun to turn it into a bach night! Maybe some games or fun activities?

Looking back, I wish I could have done something like that for my wedding. Unfortunately my fam is too traditional and thinks that celebrating is indicative of a lack of discipline lol.

ALSO: I'd take into account the amount of hand-washing/sanitizing/labor you're going to be doing prior to the wedding. Typically, mehndi a week beforehand would be fine, but I know we've all been hand-washing and sanitizing like crazy lately and I'm thinking it's not going to be dark come wedding day. 2-3 days out might be ideal if you're looking for that "suhaag color" look.

Yes my henna artist did mention that. Im prepared to wear a glove on my hand for a whole week if I have to. I am only getting the palm of my left hand done. Iknow the palm always stains darker than the back of the hand so hopefully I can keep it dark.

For my bridal shower we got it done 3nights prior but unfortunately with everyones work schedules, a weeknight will not work.

Do you think it would be too much to get a dhol player and bhangra dancers? This “party” will be less than 15 people. Im waiting for a quote to see if its even doable.

I think perhaps for 15 people, it might not be worth the effort. Bhangra/Jaggo is very much along the lines of "the more, the merrier" and "go big or go home". If you were having a full-on jaggo (with all the aunties and drunk uncles), then perhaps dholkis and bhangra dancers would be more appropriate.

Lol! Yeah I get what you are saying. Im thinking maybe I could book them for the actual wedding. I just get too excited when I start planning. I already knew dancers were expensive because I couldn’t afford it for my bridal shower last year.
