My mom's officiating my wedding!

Cathryn, on April 8, 2011 at 4:25 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 1 14

A friend of mine did a similar thing and thought it would be really special if I could have my mom perform my wedding. Thankfully - although hesitantly at first - she agreed. She got ordained through this http://www.theamm.org/ - BTW there are tons of these type of sites but I thought this one seemed the best. Mom called them and they explained what she needed to do - it was easier than I thought. I'm pretty excited about it.

My FHB is Baptist but I'm not and we didn't want to do the courthouse or church thing. Thankfully he also thought this was a good idea.

I think that is awesome! I hate that my mom has been the most supportive throughout the entire wedding planning process, and that aside from FH she's my best friend, yet she doesn't really get a special moment on our wedding day. That sure will be special!

Rosie, your mom sitting in that church watching you be married is surely special enough.

Cathryn, it is beautiful that your mom can do this for you. I'd be a blubbering idiot up there crying so hard that no one would understand. lol

I think that's a great idea! My brother is officiating our wedding. He came forward and said he would really like to do it and I almost had a heart attack because he is the most shy person ever. Luckily we are only having 15 people at our wedding so he will be fine. Smiley smile Congrats!

That's awesome. My mom is a JP she has married my one cousin and the other one this summer. I was going to have her do mine, but she gets to emotional.

I've heard another girl do this months ago, but I have always wondered how it works. So if it's not in court is it just like a spiritual union or does it have a legal side to it?

I think it is very special that you are getting married like this!

I am Catholic, and I am having a Catholic wedding. My family as Catholics would find it very strange if I didn't Smiley tongue

Anyone considering having someone ordained online as the officiant should check out this New York Times article:

    • In Alabama, Connecticut, Virginia and Tennessee, a marriage is clearly invalid if performed by someone ordained online.

    • In most of the other states, the validity of a marriage performed by someone ordained online is unclear, because there has not yet been a case ruling on the issue, one way or another.

    • Asking your local court officials does not really help. Until and unless there is a case in your jurisdiction that goes one way or another, no one can know whether a marriage performed by someone ordained online is valid.

    • You will not find out whether your marriage is valid when the license is filed. You will find out only if the status of the marriage is someday challenged. Such a challenge would typically arise at the time of a divorce, death, or other bankruptcy, meaning it will be too late to fix the situation.

If you live in one of the few states that still recognizes common law marriage, you are likely to be ok even if the ceremony is later found to be invalid. However, in all other circumstances, I strongly recommend that you have at least a brief civil ceremony for paperwork purposes if you are married by someone ordained online.

Most websites that do online ordination have information about the states that do and don't recognize it.

This is the website my MOH who is now also officiating my ceremony got her ordination from. It has a great deal of information for several states. Some states required local congegrations for the ordinations to be recognized and they set those up.
