My photographer's pregnant/due 2 months b4 the wedding.

rusticbride, on January 18, 2014 at 8:52 AM Posted in Planning 0 13

I hate having dreams. Had a dream last night that my pregnant photographer had to back out of the wedding due to an illness after pregnancy, and of course, I was left in the cold without a photographer on my wedding day.

I woke up, frantically checked the contract, and the contract states that in the event of an illness, she would secure a professional replacement. Well, what if there's NO replacement to be found by then?

She's due in mid-March. My wedding's mid-May. I know she'd want to have some time off to be with her new bundle of joy, and rightfully so. I also know recovering from a pregnancy/labor can be really tiring/stressful, and yeah, sometimes women get infections or other conditions associated with labor (My Mom did get an infection right after I was born, for example.)

Urgh. Do I need to be looking for a "just in case" photographer myself now? I'm so Type-A... what the hell would I do without a professional photographer?

Just for a time table, I booked my photographer back in May 2012, so she was not pregnant yet at the time.

2 months is a long time. I think you'll be fine. Most women in my profession only take off 6 weeks, and thus your two months is beyond the 6 weeks.

You could talk to her and ask who the replacement would be(I'm sure she has people)

@EricaTX, I know! I know the standard is 6 weeks, but it's still a little spooky only having that two week cushion. I'm also supposed to be taking bridals with her on April 17, so 1 month before the wedding. That's still within her 6 week range there...

I still wouldn't worry. Talk to her if it'll make you feel better, though. Photography isn't your normal 9-to-5 job. If she owns her own business, then she might not give herself the 6 weeks - she might do a job here and there because she won't have any other income. Perhaps ask her how many clients she'll be seeing in that time - if there's only 2 or 3, then you'll be fine.

@soon2bMrsB, I'm really thinking about that because I'm also thinking she may have other photography commitments before mine around those times. I just want to know her plan I guess lol

You really have nothing to worry about 6 weeks is a long time for someone to recover from having a baby, most people leave the hospital the same or next day. I have the same stipulation in my business contract BUT I would never secure a replacement in the photographers situation if I had a normal pregnancy. There really is no reason for her to considering how long she has between your wedding and her delivery.

Update: I talked to my photographer as suggested. Her due date has actually been pushed up to the end of February. I also asked about a replacement photographer, and if one was already available for that date, just in case (stated in the contract that she'd get a professional replacement in the event of an illness, etc). She said she already has a few with all of my dates on her calendar, just incase.

ALL IS WELL, Yay! She also said she has 5 weddings before my date, and 3 of those are before my bridals. This is also her 4th kid, so she's been around the block with these types of questions. Super helpful, feel so much better.

She'll be fine. My friend JUST had her baby and she'll be back to work in March.

If she states in her contract that she'll find a replacement in case of an emergency, I would trust her.

Talk to her about it, if she can get a replacement you should find out who it is and look at their work and then make a decision whether you should keep looking or not.

I wouldn't worry about this...after all unless she'll be a single mom with no family nearby she can have her husband/mom whoever stay with the baby. I'm thinking of teachers that get 6 weeks leave and go back to work so 2 months should be fine. Then again I know nothing about having a newborn lol

I had the same exact thing happen. My wedding was in May and my photographer had a baby in March. Everything was totally fine.
