My Wedding is at my apartment....

heather, on September 20, 2012 at 2:41 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 13

I have a big enough apartment to hold 20 people and still be comfortable. We have a small balcony that can hold 10 guests plus a huge door that opens and others can see. We are planning to hold the ceremony on the back balcony. Is there any decoration suggestions on how to decorate the apartment without looking like a home. I want to stay within my 1500 budget and keep the guestlist small. Im looking for high impact ways on a small impact budget... HELP

Please no trying to advertize yourselves, I need honest advice

    Lol at ur disclaimer there!

    Welcome to WW heather!

I have not heard of this before but then again I havent heard of alot of things! In reference to decorations, can you post of picture of your house, the part where you would like the ceremony to go on? Maybe that can help. Is it just the ceremony? or both ceremony and reception

Are you able to move your furniture out, and perhaps rent chairs? I think the key here is to be clutter free and remove all of your personal items that will be in the way ie: magazine racks, extra nick knacks and such. Does your apt have a common area that would be more suitable? A grand entrance, garden area or entertaining room that you can reserve?

Welcome! I think the thing that makes most places seem like a home is the furniture. Is there any back room (bedroom or something) that you might want to put some of your furniture? That way you can free up space and set up a couple matching tables for dinner?

On the other hand, I think one of the most charming things about your proposed wedding is that it is in your home! Sounds wonderful! You could go the other way and go super home-y. Do a appetizer reception/cocktail party and let everyone enjoy your wonderful couch, chairs, etc.

You could dress up your furniture with ribbons in your colors, buy flowers from the grocery store and put vases around with flowers, use cute home-y trays to serve food on the coffee table.--clearly I'm loving this idea, but you don't have to.

Im sorry, I dont have pics quite yet but I can explain the house:

We have a door to enter which leads to a small hallway and stairs to the upstairs. A door into our kitchen area and then we walk around to the living room. we have lots of storage and carpet lol. Then we have a set of stairs to the upstairs bedrooms which we dont use, this will be for dancing and mingling as well as the downstairs. Then the door to the roof balcony.

I can post pics in a bit. Yes we are having both at the apartment.

Plenty of streamers and paper lantern should help with that. I agree with Shelly to clearing out the regular house furniture. They have weddings in lofts all the time. Do some searches on those and get some inspiration.

Hmm... I'd suggest going to Joann Fabrics and/or Michaels to look for items. At our venue, we'll be decorating an arch with tulle fabric and Christmas ornaments (getting married in December). Perhaps you can do something like that for a good price?

You can have table centerpieces on your dining room and coffee tables. Do you have a lot of furniture in the space?

With the furniture we dont have much just a couch and some chairs we are leaving for guests to sit on they are nice chairs. we will be borrowing chairs from my church and some tables as well. We have a back roof porch which is completely inclosed so no one can jump Smiley smile JK

We have a huge upstairs with 2bedrooms in which are not used. They will act as the common area for dancng etc. we dont have many stairs to the 2nd floor so its not a huge pain. As well as the downstairs holding the food and anything else needed.

Clear out the furniture and knickknacks, rent party tables/chairs if you can, drape the walls in fabric, hang string lights, lanterns and candles EVERYWHERE.

Can you clear off and paint the walls a fun color?

Can you take down any artwork you have and replace it with displays like family photos, engagement photos, that kind of thing?

I will start off saying I think this idea is really cool! Smiley smile However, I must mention this as well, after renting tables, chairs, and decorations you may be spending more than if you find a place like a public park pavilion or church basement!

Does 1500 need to include the rings and dress?

I'd say buy flowers wholesale to decorate with and serve only wedding cake and punch.

We had 20 people at our wedding too and did it at a cottage. We moved the furniture out of the way and set up 2 long tables. We kept everything very minimal which I recommeend, otherwise it can look cheesy really fast! We did a lot of paper lanterns with LED lights in them. If you are planning to take the party into the evening I highlly recommend this! It wasn't too expensive and once done it looked so magical. Also, we also only spend $90 on flowers (including my bouquet), we got hydrangeas (they were the first to die), gladiolus and mixed bouquets. You can totally do it!
