The community guidelines forbid you from telling others how to post, homegirl. and as a white person committed to anti-racism, it's my job to call out other white people when i see them doing something racist, like appropriating a culture that's not theirs. sorry not sorry.

And the little sombreros are maybe a tiny bit better than larger ones because at least you could scroll by fast and not even realize they're there. I don't care if you've used mustaches before or if you "go all out." big bushy mustache and sombrero (big or small) are part of grossly caricatured and ugly stereotypes of mexican men.

white people need to stop using other cultures for fun. there's more information than you can imagine online about how to properly respect a culture instead of appropriating it, and unfortunately, some aspects of your shower cross over into appropriation. i'm posting this so that other brides might read this and maybe reconsider their own "other peoples culture as a prop" theme that they were thinking about.

it's a complicated topic, and something that people grapple with all the time, so thanks so much for the hard critical thought you've put into your responses to me.

No I don't 100% understand that it is offensive & I don't mean it in an offensive way. Look, Im a Texan girl, I have Hispanic family I LOVE me some Mexican food, (tamales, tacos, mexican street corn in a cup & margaritas). I love alot of things about Mexican culture. I wanted something different than the plain old wedding shower... But, ain't no way im gonna call it a "Fiesta" and have all these things but not make it look pretty like a real fiesta.

To be honest the size of the sombreros have nothing to do with it--the pairing with the mustaches, however unintended it may have been, is unfortunate and reminds people of many incidences of white people targeting Mexicans with jokes and stereotypes that contribute to the great difficulties they face in America.

That being said, the good news is that doing something racist does not make you a bad person. You can always learn and change. I would argue that every white person has done/said/though something racist at least once every year of their life. It's much better if we hear people when they ask us to consider our actions, their effect on those who reap the ripple effects, and avoid contributing to similar actions in the future. Better for everyone.

Yes to everything Poptart said. I'm certainly not a "texas girl" but I do live here too, and just like you I have around 18 different favorite mexican restaurants and tons of Latinx friends. Friends who I listen to when they tell me I've messed up. Which I do. We all do. It's part of growing up in a society that indoctrinated us with implicit attitudes about certain kinds of people. Like i said, there is a line between appreciation and appropriation. I wouldn't feel comfortable at all with a fiesta theme, but if you had just stuck to mexican food, mexican drinks, and some decoration (the blanket, flowers, bright colors) i wouldn't have called anything out.

Listen, "honey", there's a difference in not knowing that something is wrong but changing your behavior and becoming more educated once you're called out on your ignorance of something versus the "whateva, I do what I want!" attitude that you are continuing to display. If you don't care about being offensive to others, that's your choice. But don't get upset when people that don't want to put up with it call you out.

Also, you've used those mustaches before?? so people are sticking those things on their sweaty upper lips and then you're just sticking them back in the bag to be used for the next big shindig??

@Lily same girl, I was just sitting here waiting... I'm so tired of people having "fiesta" themed parties. And also because you're a "Texas" girl does not put you above to have a "fiesta" themed party. Have you ever been to Mexico? Although I am "half" white, I define as Hispanic because that's what I have known my whole life. BTW, I'm from Texas, too and have no intentions of having a fiesta theme. You know why? Because my wedding IS a fiesta! FFS!

    ETA: It's Cerveza not Cervesa.

OP, the fact that you're defending this is what's most offensive, TBH.

If you had said "oh shit guys, my bad. I didn't realize how offensive this could be. I'm sorry" that would have been 100% better.

I'm hispanic (mostly of Mexican decent) and it gets tiring seeing people use my culture as a theme.

PS: Texas stole Texas from Mexico. Throwing the "I'm Texan" card, in my experience, does not muster sympathy or solidarity with many Mexican people (unless you're from-the-valley Texan)

I'm a Texas girl, too. I'm Hispanic. And I fucking love Mexican food. Sorry to tell you, but none of that gives you a free pass to appropriate Mexican culture just because you think it's "pretty" and "fun". I'm glad you enjoyed your shower, but you should open your mind a little to how your actions are being perceived.

Oh god lol I can say " Ain't " and not be ignorant hooonnneeyyy. I do hate admitting when im wrong. @PW&G you're right it is part of growing in society to realize these differences, and while I was only recomending that if it offends someone that they could keep scrolling ( I wouldn't want too stare at/ talk about something that offended me) I wasnt telling anyone how to post... That being said, thankyou for making me aware, and I do apologize to anyone I these pictures/the theme might have offended, I wasn't aware that anything we did pertaining to the party was offensive. Im a very nice person & and would never intentionally offend anyone by any means. But, you know I can't take it back... I can only take what you've said into consideration. So it's no use bombarding me with mean comments sayi g the same thing over and over and saying offensive things to me @LillyBean like im "ignorant" because I talk a little different than you.

Oh god hoooooonnnneeeeyyyyyy I didn't say you couldn't say "ain't" and not be ignorant, I said "I can't" with BOTH of those things individually. Comprehension is hard, I know.

FutureMrsThompson, you are ignorant though just by definition: lacking knowledge or awareness.

I never said the way you talk makes you ignorant. You can stop putting words in my mouth.

Like I said, it's not the case that we have to stop appreciating other cultures. We just all need to be hyperaware of when something we do might be offensive to people in that culture (any person in that culture, not just the people in your life who are). Your bright colors and paper flowers and mexican blankets? Pretty! (though I have a lot of Mexican friends who would still roll their eyes at you) The mustaches and sombreros, like I said before, are seen to many as a really ugly and offensive stereotype of Mexican people. The mispelling of some spanish words also hints at not caring as much about appreciating and respecting the culture and instead just having it be a fun theme. Those things are where my problems came in. Hopefully my pointing them out will make you a little more aware of this tricky problem that many people struggle with the next time you face it.

also, talking about things that offend me is my fuckin' bread and butter. kinda comes with the insufferable anti-racist feminist territory.
