Naked cake (one with no frosting) drying out?

Sierra, on April 14, 2017 at 2:06 AM Posted in Style and Décor 0 22

I've been emailing a bakery about wedding cakes and sent them this picture of a "naked" wedding cake. They said they won't make them because the cake dries out too fast. Has anyone else had this issue? I really love the way they look but I don't really want the cake to taste horrible.

You have to literally soak the cake with some type of liquid. The chances of the ends becoming hard and crusty is very high. Worse case order a cake (a small one!) Let it sit out for a few hours and try it........im a chubby kid I would totally order a small small cake and try it lol

Our bakery is making our top tier naked. We have ordered this style before and it never dried up. It was super moist and delicious.

Maybe try different bakery to get what you want?

I plan to have a naked cake too. I was told that these are actually not as dry because they are usually made closer to the wedding day, whereas the traditional wedding cake is sometimes made days or even a week before.

It's when it summer time/hot weather that naked cakes are more likely to dry out.

I've never heard of that before, but I guess it makes sense. Maybe a 2nd opinion from some other bakeries in your area? Or if you are really set on a naked cake, a small one tier cutting cake and then sheet cake or cupcakes for everyone else?

Maybe the bakery just doesn't like the look of naked cakes in general. It's hard for them to sell their ability to decorate cakes well when a cake isn't really decorated.

I brought up a naked cake to a few bakeries that we met with and that seemed to be the consensus. That naked cakes are dry and just don't taste very good.

They can be done. You just have to find someone who is very skilled in doing it.

We did a semi naked cake. We had no issues with it drying out. We did use one of the best bakeries in town so I think that helped!

You really need to find someone good at this. I have seen several of them in the wild and they never look as good as the photos. Keep in mind, most of those photos are from styled shoots which don't last 12 hours.....

The last one we had was delivered while the couple was doing a first look. The mother saw it, went apeshit and called the baker to take it back, lol..... It was returned with icing.

We had a naked cake. It was delicious and gorgeous and not one bit dry. The baker at the Marriott made ours and didn't even question it when we said it was what we wanted. I would search for bakers that specialize in them if you are having these kinds of issues with kick back.

We are having a naked cake. We are doing sponge cake with a pastry cream filling. Our baker didn't hesitate when we said it's what we wanted

I'm having a semi naked cake. My baker wasn't against it at all considering she's done a few. I originally wanted a square cake, but she said those dry out, even if there is frosting on them, so we are doing rounds instead. I think you must have full trust in your baker bc it's the "decorating" that makes the cake come to life.

Perhaps see if there's a glaze (like doughnuts!) that can be put on. I don't know if that would help the issue, but it's a thought

They're tricky cakes to make because they're more likely to dry out and you can't hide imperfections under icing. That said, it can be done. I would find a baker that's done at least a few successful naked cakes before. If the baker isn't confident, it's probably for a reason.

As someone who just attempted a naked cake, I know they are tricky. I made a couple last week and they were dried and hard the next day, the first time my baking has ever failed. You have to find someone who makes them and knows how to maintain them for the wedding.

Dry. It looks like the baker ran out of icing.

We are doing one but it is going to be strawberry cake with a cream cheese frosting! The baker said strawberry cake tends to be a wetter cake than others and the cream cheese layer in between will also help!
