Name change across states??

Alexis, on June 10, 2019 at 4:19 PM Posted in Married Life 0 3
So my fiancé and I recently moved to Ohio from Michigan, meaning the address on my Michigan drivers license is no longer mine. We are getting married in Michigan. I was planning on waiting to get my Ohio drivers license until after the wedding so I only had to do it once (changing last name at the same time). Just wondering if anyone has done this? Or do I have to change everything in MI first, and then come back to OH and change it again?

It’s illegal to not have your DL with your current address on it so you’ll likely have to go get your Ohio license now and then update it again after you get married once you get your new social security card. You shouldn’t have to do anything in Michigan other than get your marriage license.

The law requires that you send your new address to the Michigan registry. And by law, you will have 30-90 days after moving to Ohio to get a new license in whatever name you are using that day. Ceck timeline, 30-90 days, with Ohio and Michigan, as different states have different grace periods. But if stopped, you are required to have already notified Michigan Motor Vehicles in the same week in which you moved. Online, or in person.
