Name Change / Addition

Alyx, on August 27, 2019 at 2:12 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 5

I am considering adding my "nickname" to become part of my legal name when I get married. I have gone by my "nickname" for over 25 years and want to be able to legally sign that name to documents and such. Has anyone done this or planning on doing this when they get married? It will basically turn into my middle name.

How do I go about doing this? Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

It's simple. Just replace your middle name with the new name.

Middle names are not legal names. That said, social security will let you move or add your maiden name to your middle name as part of your name change due to marriage. Anything beyond that (like adding a totally new name to your middle name) may require you to petition the court for a legal name change separately from your marriage name change.

I don't currently have a middle name and my last name will remain the same. Thank you for the help.

Hey Alyx! I would definitely recommend contacting your local government offices about matters involving your name change.

They will be able to tell you exactly what you are able to do, and how difficult it is or how long it will take.
