Name change advice!

Kali, on October 10, 2019 at 11:37 PM Posted in Married Life 0 4
I’m getting married next month and still am unsure about my name. In my fiancé’s culture, they have their mothers last name and fathers last name hyphenated say mine is Jones and his is Smith. So our kids would have both of our names, Jones-Smith. I decided instead of just keeping my name I would hyphenate mine so it would match our kids. Now I’m not sure if I want to hyphenate it, or drop my middle name it’s Marie, I hate it, and make my maiden name my new “middle name.” Has anyone else done something similar? Any advice? I don’t want to upset my parents by dropping my middle name.

I dropped my middle name and made my maiden name my middle name. My parents couldn’t have cared less. Now that I’m getting remarried to a guy with an already hyphenated last name, if I switch to his name, I’m going to take my middle name back since he calls me by that name. The paperwork is the same either way.

It's a personal decision. I wouldn't worry about what your parents think. Go by what you want. It is your name. I went back and forth and opted to change my last name to his and drop my maiden name. I like my middle name though.

If you hate your middle name, I would drop it and take your maiden name as your new middle name. Don't think about what your parents will think, it's your name after all!

Thank you guys for the advice! I really don’t like the idea of a hyphenated last name, it seems too long! I’m glad to know I’m not the only one going through this!
