Name change and buying plane tickets

JRose, on March 27, 2017 at 6:59 AM Posted in Honeymoon 0 15

My fiancé and I are getting married in July but are not going on our honeymoon until October. My name should hopefully be all changed by then. Does that mean I shouldn't buy plane tickets until after my name is changed and I have my new passport? I wanted to buy them now.

You can buy them now but make sure the last name matches on all documentation. Passports normally take 6 weeks to come in the mail so you should be okay! Social Security card takes about 2 weeks to come in the mail and the DMV will change your license right away with the stapled paper to the back until the new one comes in the mail (about a week).

Or buy them now and don't get your new passport until after you're back. I still have my maiden name on my passport (married coming up two years) because my home country doesn't replace passports for free when you change your name, and it doesn't expire until 2019. So we just book tickets in my old name, no problem.

Changing my name at the DMV was super fast and I got my license in a week or so. If you are traveling internationally and need a passport, I might wait to get s new one and book in your old name because passports take longer and cost more.

Do you need a passport? Not sure we're you are going. If you only need your driver's license, book in married name. Passport, I would leave. You can't do anything with your name until you have your official marriage license back. Then passports can be slow. They rejected mine twice, I finally took filed it through a different office, same paperwork and it went through. It took over 9 months.

Buy with your maiden name and just use your passport as your ID for travelling, not your new driver's license. If you're using credit cards and those are changed to your new name, have your new driver's license as ID for those.

I won't be changing my name legally until after the honeymoon. Just so I don't run into any problems.

With all this security stuff I wouldn't even purchase any ticket unless everything on your documentation has been legally changed. You might even want to carry a legal copy of your marriage license. Don't get me started on what I think has happened to 4th amendment rights in this country.

I would wait to change your name until after you got back from your honeymoon just to avoid any potential issues and having to remember which items have your maiden name and which have your married name.

I would buy a plane ticket with your current name now, and not start the name-change process until after you get back from your honeymoon!

In a best case scenario if you were really on top of it and there were no delays, you'd be able to get through changing your name with SS and the DMV by October, but I doubt you'd have enough time to get your new passport back - and if there are any delays at any part of the process you'd be screwed Smiley sad I think it's safer to wait!

I'm dealing with the same thing! We are getting married in September but waiting to honeymoon until January or February. We will be going out of the country and I'm trying to decide if everything can get done before we leave for passport or if I should just wait until after we are back. I just got my passport a few years ago and I haven't looked into any fees for a name change.

Just wait to legally change your name until after the honeymoon. It's way to hard otherwise and some people wait like years to change their names because of all the steps it takes. Not worth the headache!

I have been traveling for over a year on my passport in maiden name. I just got a ten year and don't want the hassle of changing it. As long as I book it in whatever name is on passport its fine

We won't be leaving for our honeymoon until September, and I am waiting to legally change my name. I need to get a new passport, and all the reservations were made under my name. I don't want to leave anything to chance, so I just rather wait and play it super safe. Of course, I'll be using his last name socially until then.
