Name Change and Moving

Help! We’re getting married in October and moving to DC in December. I plan to wait until we move to DC to change my name so I can make sure everything is delivered to the right address. But what about my driver’s license? Do I have to get a DC license and then go back and get one with my name once it’s changed? Or can I do this all at once?

    Pretty sure when you go to any DMV as long as you can prove your legal marriage you can request the name change and the state change at the same time.

    Personally, I would still start the Social Security name change process in the meantime. You probably won't get your Marriage Abstract back until a week or two after you get married. Social Security took about a month for me (maybe a bit less). You will need to show your updated Social Security card to change your name. According to the DC DMV website, you have a 60 day grace period from when you move there until you get a license, so that's plenty of time. No reason to pay for a license twice.

    You should be able to do it all at once as long as you start with SSA.
