Name change and voting

Emma, on August 28, 2020 at 6:56 AM Posted in Married Life 0 26
So our wedding is October 3rd. We get back from our honeymoon on October 11th. I wanted to change my name ASAP now I’m thinking it might conflict with voting in the presidential election.
In our state early voting starts on October 13th. Now my question is, how long does it actually take to change your name? And if I were to early vote with my maiden name would it mess things up with the voting poles? Or do I just need to wait till November 3rd to vote?

Honestly it just seems too risky to me, I would wait until after voting to change your name.

With Covid I know things may be backed up a little. I would try to schedule your appointments now? Maybe that would speed up the process. Otherwise I would wait

From what I know there aren’t any appointments needed. Everything in my county has gone back to walk in

That’s kinda what I was thinking. Just start everything after November 3rd. I need to see if there’s a rule on how long I can wait to change my name on my SSC. I know after I change that I have 60 days to tell the DMV.
My mom said I should call the election office because they’d be able to tell me exactly what to do. My moms voter registration still pops up as her divorced name instead of her current married name, 20 years later 🤦🏼‍♀️ But she’s still able to vote because I believe here they match your licenses number to your voter registration number

Someone I know who works for SSA advised to wait until things reopen. They said it’s so backed up on their end and you have to mail your actual Driver’s License in with the application.

What would you do for driving and if you were to get pulled over in the interim? They couldn’t answer that 😂

The office in my county is open and we can go in to show everything. No need to mail in my drivers license from what I can tell

Oh you’re lucky! Yeah things are currently closed here, although they are in the works of setting plans to reopen. Just not sure when that will happen.

I will definitely call them after we get married to make sure they are still open! Though part of me is just think to wait till November to change it legally but change it socially right after the wedding

That makes sense! I had a friend who got married and lives in the same state as us and she waited a while to change her name and didn’t have any issues, so I’m okay with waiting until things are safely reopened.

Everywhere you have to go to get your name changed (social security, DMV, etc). I think making an appointment would be much more convenient if you want to get it done before voting. That’s just my opinion though.

The only thing that worries me is the DMV says that they must be notified of the name change within 60 days of the wedding. But (from what I understand) you can’t notify them without your SS card being changed. Unless it means 60 days after you change your name on your SS card

Oh yea. I’ll make an appointment with the dvm at least. I don’t know how our SSI office works but I will definitely call them after the wedding to set up an appointment. I don’t want to set up an appointment quite yet because I’d rather wait till I have my marriage certificate in my hand instead of risking it not being ready before the appointment

I would probably wait. If you participated in early voting, you could change it shortly afterwards and I don’t think it would cause any issues.

As far as how long it takes to actually change your name... the day I went to the SSA office, they gave me paperwork stating it was official. My new card came in the mail about a week later. I went to the DMV once I received my new card. So, it is a pretty quick, and easy, process. However, changing your voters registration might not be that quick.

I believe they change it at the dmv since that’s where I originally registered to vote. I am going to call the voting polls to see what they say about the name change.
I’m glad to know it shouldn’t take to long!

You know, not that you said that, I do remember them asking me if I wanted to update my voters registration while I was at the DMV! So that being said, I had everything change over within 2 weeks.
