Name change and voting

So our wedding is October 3rd. We get back from our honeymoon on October 11th. I wanted to change my name ASAP now I’m thinking it might conflict with voting in the presidential election. In our state early voting starts on October 13th. Now my question is, how long does it actually take to change...

In our state early voting starts on October 13th. Now my question is, how long does it actually take to change your name? And if I were to early vote with my maiden name would it mess things up with the voting poles? Or do I just need to wait till November 3rd to vote?

So I am certainly no expert on the legal aspects of name change, but I would think if there is some kind of 60 day limit in letting the DMV know, I would think it'd be after you change your SS card. Not after your wedding. Because some brides take months, even years, to start the name change process. Might be different where you are, but I'd get some clarification on that part. Otherwise I'd personally just wait until after voting. Our DMVs are open here as well and don't require appointments, however you're still waiting in line for hours on end because of how backed up things got from COVID.

I would wait. According to the national social security website all of their offices nationwide are still closed. I had to mail my stuff in and it took about a month to get my new social security card. I immediately went to the DMV and now I’ve been waiting over 2 weeks for my new license.

Was wondering same. Does anyone know if changing your name is basically just social security and drivers license? Everything else like passport, etc. too but the name change becomes official after those two from my understanding. Then after those both clear voting should be okay but correct me if I’m wrong

You have 2 years from the date of your wedding to change your name with SSA.
    Here's a link:
https://www.ssa.gov/ssnumber/ss5doc.htm Choose "corrected" as the type of card so you'll get appropriate information about what you need.
Since it sounds like you can do everything without having to wait for the mail, I'd just go after the election. You'd probably be okay doing it beforehand, but even if the chance is very small, you don't want to risk the possibility of your vote not being counted.

I believe so. The only really important thing is your W2 if you work

It will probably be better to wait. Even if everything is open near you, you still have to get your new social security card in the mail. (You can fill out the forms in person, but the card itself is mailed.) Since that should be your first stop (drivers licese and voter registration next stop at DMV), you may not get it in time to have everything updated. I do recommend requesting at least one, if not more, copies of your marriage license when you/your officiant submits it. That way you can change your name at multiple places at the same time and don't have to wait for one place to return it to you.

But feel free to immediately use Mrs. New Last Name socially! Your job may be willing to update your name tag/plate/sign if you have one, maybe even your email address. You can update all your social media accounts and address yourself accordingly. You can even sign checks that were made out to you and your spouse in your new name. (e.g., check made out to Mr. and Mrs. John Doe can be endorsed with you signing Jane Doe even if the change isn't official yet.)
