Name Change but Real id Required before Wedding Day?

Sara Collins, on June 14, 2024 at 10:05 AM Posted in Honeymoon 0 3
Hello everyone! My FH and I are getting married next year in North Carolina on May 10, 2025. The state requires us to have the Real ID by May 7, 2025 which is before the wedding. I don’t want to get my passport and license changed twice next year when I change my name. What are your thoughts on what to do in this? We do plan on leaving for our honeymoon shortly after the wedding.

I would get your Real ID now and then use your current passport with maiden name to travel if you're going shortly after your wedding. Then you can work on changing both once you get back from honeymoon. Just be sure your plane tickets/cruise tickets also match the name on ID/Passport.

Some other options are available rather than a state-issued "Real" ID. You can have a passport instead. You just have to be passengers identified for travel sufficiently and consistent on the travel papers. It is only areas controlled by the federal government that this requirement exists to ID yourself to their satisfaction. This is the information I have consistently found.

You can then do name changes at your leisure after the wedding events and honeymoon.

Agree with this. Particularly because your ID has to match your flight ticket and names on tickets can't be changed. Get your Real ID now, book your flight with your current name and use your current passport for your honeymoon. Replace everything after you return. You can still file your name change with the department of social security in the meantime, that is the first step anyway so it won't even necessarily slow down the process.
