Name Change Decision

Amanda.nicole, on February 6, 2020 at 3:55 PM Posted in Planning 0 20

Ladies who wanted to keep their maiden name in some way, what did you do?

Did you keep your birth name? Change your first name to your first+middle? Make your maiden name your middle? Have two last names? What does your current name look like? First middle married....First first middle (maiden) married......First middle middle (maiden) married.....Or do you have two last names now? What are the pros and cons of each?

My fiance really wants me to take his last name by itself and I'm more comfortable with this because he's changing his last name to his mom's maiden name before we get married, so we're both taking new identities. But he's getting rid of his father's last name intentionally and I want to keep my dad's name somewhere. My mom picked out my first, dad picked out my middle, and my maiden name is my dad's. Also, my first, middle, and married initials would be 'ANL' and I just don't like that.

ETA: I'm making a spreadsheet of possible combinations and pros/cons, so here it is.

If he's wanting to change his name anyway, could you create your own? Maybe a hybrid of the last names? that way it's one word and not hyphenated?

So my full name is Arlene Emily Vargas. I’m dropping my middle name and adding my married name; so it’ll be Arlene Vargas Dickens. Which works perfectly for me bc I love the name Emily and wish I had gone by Emily instead but if I have a daughter I can name her Emily 😊🤷🏻‍♀️

No, we're both set on his mom's maiden name. I just want to figure out the confusion/initials with my middle and maiden names.

I changed my name to First Maiden Last. So my maiden name became my middle name, and I lost my middle name. I'm happy with the decision. It's what my mother & grandmother did too. My initials are DDD now so not great but I literally never put my initials on anything so it doesn't matter.

    First Middle Middle(Maiden) Last(Married)

So my maiden name is a second middle name.
I don’t use it anywhere other than on my social security card since most places only ask for one middle initial

So if you *have* to choose only one middle name, which do you do? In that situation, I'd probably choose to only say my maiden/middle instead of my birth middle.

I use my birth middle since it’s “first” in the sequence of my name 🤷🏻‍♀️

My mom did this same thing though and some of her stuff she uses her birth middle initial and some stuff she uses her maiden name initial

I added my maiden name as a second middle name. In my state your full name (including middle name(s)) goes on your drivers license. If I was forced to have one middle name only? Hmmm... hyphenate my middle name then? 😂 My middle and maiden name both have significance to me so I wouldn’t want to erase either if given the option.

So I was leaning towards dropping my middle name and using my maiden name as my middle, but my mom doesn't want me to lose my middle name. So I guess I'll do two middle names.

I dropped my middle name and took my maiden name as my middle name. I’ve had the hardest time getting my employer to change my name on everything that my name change doesn’t seem real. I still have to go by Laura MaidenName all day everyday.

I can’t imagine why showing them an official document like your social security card isn’t enough for them to change. Seems like they’re being unnecessarily difficult. I’ve been working in my industry for over 10 years so even though my name has changed plenty of people will continue to refer to me by my maiden name for at least a while and it doesn’t bother me. 😁

I really want to keep my maiden name but thankfully don't have a middle name, so I'll just make my maiden name into my middle name. So I'll be Elizabeth Maiden Married.

Unless you go by "Amanda Nicole". I would just drop Nicole and put your maiden name as your middle name.

I'm keeping my name, but am considering informally using my fiance's last name in my personal life/for those close to me

My fiance is taking my last name! He's a third, didn't really know his dad so he wants to get rid of his last name. I wasn't keen on the whole idea of taking the man's last name anyway. I've had my last name my whole life, why change it? We discussed hyphenating or making a new last name, but he was really set on taking mine so it all worked out!

First Middle Maiden-New. I didn't want to completely give up my last name or my middle name. So I decided to keep all of my names and hyphenate my last name.
