Name Change Dilemma

Miles, on October 20, 2020 at 3:29 PM Posted in Married Life 0 5

Hello. My Fiancée and I are getting married in just over a month. We are both stoked that our big day is almost here. There is just one hiccup that we thought would be a minor inconvenience but is turning out to be a huge pain. I have a hyphenated last name. Neither of us want it. Instead, we want to take and be known as only part of my current last name. We live in Florida and I have been having quite the time determining the most convenient, and cost effective way to go about this. Ideally, I would love to use the marriage certificate and have her say, "I only want the name that comes after the hyphen" but DMV has informed me that she has to take the last name as it appears on the certificate. Anyone in Florida that has been in a similar predicament? Thanks in advance.

The DMV would update her license based on her social security card. The social security office will let you change your name to basically whatever you want with a valid marriage certificate.

She should be able to change hers when she goes to the social security office. If you want to change yours then you might be able to do that with social security or you might have to have your name legally changed. I'm not sure how it works if both people want to change their last name.

I'm in California and I had two last names, not hyphenated and wanted to keep only one as my middle name and take my husbands last name. When we went o pick up our marriage cert I was told either I took both my last names to be my new middle or none. I wanted to keep my moms last name as my middle so it crushed me to have to leave it out but I didn't want to keep my dads last name, I have no relationship with him.

Each state is different. I’m in Tennessee. My husband wanted to change his name, which essentially you want to do, so he went to the judge before we got married and changed his name first so that I could have an easier time after the wedding.
Also, I went to school with a girl that only wanted one of her husbands hyphened names and she had to submit a petition to the judge.
It was a quick and easy process here. I’m not sure what the process looks like In FL.

Thank you all for the responses. So we are in Florida, and while Social Security has pretty much told me that she can chose the name she wants, the DMVs have informed me that the name must match what is on the Marriage Certificate. I say “DMVs” because I contacted DMV offices in multiple counties to see if I would get different answers. We were told early on that it wouldn’t be a problem. So I didn’t rush to get my name changed. I knew I’d have to go petition the court to change my name, but it shouldn’t be that difficult for her.
