Name change during covid

Paige, on September 1, 2020 at 9:05 PM Posted in Married Life 0 6
I have submitted my marriage license and paperwork to social security via mail, but am unable to get an appointment with SOS until January. How did everyone get their name changed during COVID with all of the craziness? I’m in Michigan.
Also, how will my ability to vote this year be effected if my social security card has my name changed and my drivers license does not? Will me need to re register with my new last name?

I just started the process. Super concerned about voting as well, <like almost deferred the changing name process to ensure voting goes smoothly>. I decided to register to get my ballot in the mail. And I don't think they check ID's to turn it in to the voting polls, definitely no checks to return by mail. Fingers crossed. But definitely curious about others' timeline / turnaround and experiences. The name mis-match due to these prolonged turn arounds is unnerving.

I am waiting till after election day to start the process. I haven't figured out how to do it with covid-19.

Does SOS stand for social security? I was under the impression this could be done totally through the mail except drivers license has to be done in person and so does the passport i think. Ugh

If you just mailed your information into SSA, I don't think you have to worry about it effecting your voter registration. In MA you have to fill out your marriage license with the name you plan to use, and they automatically update your name in the voter registry (but nowhere else, as far as I can tell) the following June, so I know I'll be okay this November. I have no idea why they do it that way, and it's probably different in other states, but maybe Google "name change marriage voter registration Michigan," and see if that helps?

Even if you do get your SS card back, in a lot of states, the voter rolls are connected to the DMV, so they'd be more likely to know about a name change if you'd gotten a new license. If you can wait to do that, that might be a good idea. Then when you go to the polls, or sign up to vote by mail, you can just use your old name this one last time.

I’m waiting until after the election to try and change it. I don’t want anything messing up my vote lol.

I am also waiting until after the election (also in Michigan). My friend got married in July and it took over a month to get her SSA stuff back so I didn't want to risk it. If anything see if you can call the SOS and see what they recommend or how that could work? I agree with what was said before, maybe it won't matter if you hold off with the SOS change for now.
