Name Change in California

Jenten428, on December 3, 2019 at 6:25 PM Posted in Married Life 0 10

We are getting married at the end of May and then my brother is having a destination wedding that same year in October. Should I wait to change my name until after we get back from his wedding? Or would 3 months be enough time to get my name changed & a new passport?

It all depends on whether you're changing your name on your passport 1 year after it being issued or more than 1 year.

    Hope this helps!

Thanks, it has been more than a year already on my current passport & not due to expire for another few years. I am fine with paying for an expedited passport, just not sure how long SSA and DMV changes will take first

My sister, who already went through this, said SSN takes about 2-6 weeks and 8 weeks for your Passport.

I would definitely just wait until after you travel, just in case. You can also change your license and with social security, but just not change your passport and name with the airline yet.

I agree with waiting. Daughter was married in So Cal last January. It took a couple weeks to get the marriage certificate back, then it took a couple weeks to get an appointment at social security, and then of course, it took FOREVER to get an appointment with the DMV (CA DMV is the worst). Then she had to wait a few weeks to receive her new license. I think it was at least April before she finally had all her documents (and she's super organized -- not a procrastinator at all). With the "Real ID" deadline next October, I'd be afraid the DMV will be even worse that usual next spring/summer.... You can use your new name in your personal life right after the wedding, and just wait to change it legally until you're back from your brother's wedding.

I would suggest just waiting. You don't want to take the chance of something holding it for a little longer than normal and you don't have one at all. here in NY my new SS card arrived in a week and my DL in 2. (SHOCKING!!!)

I also haven't done my passport lol just putting off making that darn appt.

I changed my passport name without my social and ID, all they require is your marriage cert. I got it back within 3 weeks. I had just renewed it less than a year before so I didn't even have to pay a fee for it.

Edited to include: My marriage cert arrived about 2 weeks after my wedding, I recommend going to change your social in person and obviously make an appointment for DMV, of course its an extra pain in CA because of the amount of people who live here but its really not that hard, I just did it this past year, married in March and by May I had everything completely changed, but the time it takes for you to get your marriage cert and of course assuming you ordered extras once you get it you can do it!

No problem at all, and if you are traveling out of the country then your passport will suffice, I mean if you get your marriage cert pretty quick I'd just do it! It was pretty smooth too, I recommend tracking your mail when you send it out so you know when it arrives and then have a better timeframe of when to expect. My husband ordered his 1st ever passport last year and paid for expedited shipping and he received his in one week. Also make sure you read your forms correctly and fill them out the right way! It'll be a piece of cake!
