Name change in Illinois with irs offices closes...

RoseSoda, on October 5, 2021 at 9:37 PM Posted in Illinois Planning 0 3
Can anyone in Illinois who has had their name changed in the past year clue me in on what the hell the IRS wants mailed in with the form? Their site is vague and I don't have a lot of time to sit on hold since their work hours are the same as mine.

I don't have a passport and obviously can't send in my actual driver's license. I kinda need it day to day. Also hearing mixed things on whether they need a birth certificate. I'm beyond frustrated, help please. 😖

Hi! Are you referring to the Social Security offices being closed?

You can still change your name, you just need to mail in your application and important documents (which tons of couples have been doing!)

I found this page on the Social Security site to be really helpful: https://www.ssa.gov/ssnumber/ss5doc.htm

    You will need to provide:

    - Proof of Citizenship (U.S. Passport or U.S. Birth Certificate)

    - Proof of Legal Name Change (Notarized Marriage License, Divorce Decree, or Court Order)

    - Proof of Identity (U.S. Driver's License, State-Issued ID Card, or Passport)

Yes, SS office is what I meant, thank you. Yes I've been to that page many times but it didn't clearly lay out what I'm supposed to do with their offices being closed and the fact that they don't accept copies. I've since gotten confirmation from someone that they do in fact expect me to send my drivers license through the mail and wait potentially weeks to receive it back, assuming it doesn't get lost. I am simply not going to do that, so I guess the name change is just going to have to wait until they decide they can do face to face things like almosy every other business has been for some time now...

    Thanks anyway, though.

I spoke with someone at the social security office and I was told I had to mail my actual driver’s license to them with the form. It’s almost been two weeks since I mailed it and I still have yet to receive it back or my new social security card. I’ve now been married 3 weeks and I still don’t legally have my husbands last name.
