Name Change, License and Passport Change

Molly, on August 5, 2020 at 1:31 PM Posted in Married Life 0 12

Hello All!

Our big wedding was pushed to next year, but we are still legally getting married October 3rd. Our honeymoon is in May 2021. Should I change my name right away? I'm afraid that if my drivers licence says my married name and passport won't be back in time before the honeymoon, it'll be a problem.

Anyone else go through this? Advice?!

thanks!

If you do I would IMMEDIATELY apply to get everything changed ASAP just in case things shut back down again. I doubt it would take 7 months to change everything though, if you did it right away you would be fine for your honeymoon in May

    So just a quick reference...
The state department received my passport renewal on March 17 and just mailed the new one to me yesterday. It should be here Friday. However, my fiancé applied for the first time ever and the post office expedited his (which the site says isn’t an option so they’re lying) and he got all his things back in under a month from when he applied.

If you’re getting paperwork married, then I would go ahead and change it all. Then you won’t have to worry about it next year with all the other postponements and people doing theirs then.

I would look into it as it could take a while for that to be done. Plus have you purchased flights or what not in your maiden name? I know passports must be valid 6 months after your trip but not sure if name changed affect that.

6 months after. I know this because I have taken students abroad and the company we work with stresses that. Since our planned honeymoon is a week after we marry I probably won't change it until afterwards since we did book flights. I would call your local passport agency.

My wedding is scheduled for 2021 in Jamaica. As such, we are required to get passports. What I've learned is that if you make edits to a new or renewed passport (maiden name to marry name) you will not be recharged for the edits as long as its within one year of the date you received your passport. If you are truly concerned, hold off on making the edits and make sure to carry the proper documentation when traveling to explain the discrepancy. With everything being delayed there's just no telling what the time frame will be, so I would steer on the side of caution. You could also completely delay the name change entirely until after the honeymoon, if you dont want to risk it. By that time you return from your honeymoon and then renew your passport with your married name. AND you won't have to repay since the change was made in last then a year. Hope this helps

If you don’t, I would check with the countries you’re visiting as it could be problematic with the passport / visas

If you’re getting legally married in Oct 2020, you’ll have plenty of time to change your name by your May 2021 honeymoon. Typically after the marriage license is filed, it’s ready to be picked up about two weeks later. Then you can start the process of changing your name at the social security office, DMV, then everything else.

Just make sure your plane tickets are booked with whatever name is or will be on your passport and ID. I've had a handful of friends get screwed because their names didn't match.

My passport is taking forever to get back to me. I know it takes a couple of weeks for the name change
