Name Change Service

Chelsea, on February 27, 2020 at 11:54 PM Posted in Married Life 0 12
Has anyone used a service like MissNowMisses or HitchSwitch to change their names? Is it worth paying for or is it just easier to do it all yourself?

You still have to do everything yourself. The only thing these services provide are the forms, which are free and easy to find online. You still have to go to the dmv and everything.

First is the social security office, then DMV and passport, then everything else (work, credit cards, utility bills, etc.). You can find the forms for social security and passport on their websites. DMV is going to vary by state but you may be able to find those forms online as well. For passport, you will need to pay the fee for a new passport unless your current passport is under a year old. I also had to pay a small fee for a new driver's license. The social security card and everything else were free. For many of the other bills and such, most accepted an email with a scanned copy of my marriage certificate and driver's license with new name.

Okay. Doesn’t sound too tedious. Thank you !!!! How long did it take for you to get the major three done ? Did you wait until after the honeymoon?

We went on our honeymoon 2 days after the wedding, so I did it later. I actually waited a few months after the fact because I got offered an internship with a government agency (got the call on the honeymoon!) which required fingerprinting and a background check, so I waited until I had been all cleared and started the internship. I went to the social security office first thing in the morning and was in and out in 15-20 minutes. The DMV took awhile, but mine doesn't allow for appointments. Everything else was done via mail (passport) or online.

All they do is charge you to send you the forms you can get online for free. You still have to do all the work. Don't waste your money.

We are going on our honeymoon 3-4 weeks after the wedding. I'm waiting to change things til we get back. We booked everything under my maiden name (intentionally) and it seemed like too short of a timeframe to get an updated passport, social security card and driver's license.

It is super easy to do yourself. I wouldn't waste my money on a service like that. Once you go to the social security office and the DMV, everything else can be done online and is free.

I was originally going to use one of those services until I posted a thread about it. Thank god I asked for advice because I am not longer using one of those services.

I never looked into using a name changing service but I found it super easy to do everything myself. My husband and I got married on 2/29/2020, I took our marriage license back to the Probate Court office on 3/2/2020 and they gave me the certified copies right then and there (because I had the money order already). From there, I went to the Social Security office with our marriage license, a certified copy of our license (in case they needed to keep one - which they didn't), my driver's license and birth certificate (just in case). They were able to change my information for me and gave me a print-out receipt to take to the DMV so I could change my license over. In my state, you have to wait 48 hours before you can get your license changed, so two days later I went to the DMV and got everything changed. I got my new social security card in the mail this past Friday and now I just have to change it through our banks, work, and a few other places. I had my name legally changed, my new license and my new social security card within a week. I started the process Monday, got my license changed Wednesday and received new social security card Friday Smiley smile
