Name Change with Travel Credits

Caroline, on January 2, 2021 at 9:51 AM Posted in Married Life 0 4
Hi all! I got married back in April, and I have lots of flight credits with American and Delta due to cancelled travel from the pandemic. Does anyone have any firsthand experience with changing their name then using flight credits from before the name change? I’ve called both airlines, and they told me that bringing a copy of my marriage certificate would be sufficient for them to reissue me a new ticket at the desk with my married name. Not sure I fully believe they won’t try to charge some crazy fee, so I’m curious if anyone has tried this or if I should wait to change my name until I’ve used all the flight credits. Thanks!

I would want this info on record (email) from the airline to be 100% sure.

Whew, makes me more happy that I'm not changing my last name. Less little inconviences.

I kind of had this issue yesterday and called TSA. It wasn’t flight credits but my rewards points from Southwest. If i used my points I had to book in my maiden name. Southwest told me I could bring my old ID with my maiden name on it and it would be fine. (My old ID is a paper copy). I called TSA to verify and they said an old ID with your maiden name, new idea with married name, and marriage certificate would be fine. He also said to call the airline and see about getting it changed to have a correct boarding pass. It happens more than we think.
*I wound up being able to book the ticket in my married legal name so I won’t be able to vouch if the above is true*

Were the flight credits issued in your name or in your frequent flier name/number? To keep using your frequent flier number you’ll need to change your name on that account (usually by submitting a copy of new social security card online to the airline) to match whatever is on your drivers license or passport (whichever you use to travel). You keep the same account ID that way, and I assume any credits would be retained just like you retain your miles/points. It’s probably best to just give them a call and have them walk you through the steps.

You should be good as long as you have that trail of name change evidence (old ID, certified copy of your marriage license, and your new ID)!

I have heard of some airlines charging fees to change your name on the ticket, but most will do it for free at least once!
