Name Change

Kelsey, on September 18, 2019 at 8:46 AM Posted in Married Life 2 10
Hello! I recently got married and mailed in my name change forms with supporting documents to my local social security office. Does anyone have experience MAILING in this information? How long did it take to get your supporting documents back? How long did it take you to get your new social security card? Thanks!

I didn't mail it in but it took about 3 weeks for my new card to come in the mail after going to the office so I'd guess you'll probably be waiting at least a month and a half?

I went into the social security office, and it took them around 2 weeks to mail me my new card. I'd anticipate waiting 3-4 weeks if I were you.

I went to the office in person because I was hesitant about mailing off the documents. They told me it would take 2 weeks for my card, but to anticipate waiting only a week. Hopefully it will arrive soon!

I have an update! I mailed in my information for the name change and about 10 days later I received a letter stating my new card would be mailed in about 2 weeks. I also got my documents back in this letter. 😁

I'm not sure about mailing, I believe it does say on the website, though.

I ended up going to the Social Security Office, it was WAY faster. I got everything done in one-day, and it took a week to come in the mail, but I was able to use it right away with a print off in the meantime. Then I did the DL rightafterwards. That was a lot harder. Because it takes abit for the new SS information to get in the system I was able to get my new DL but I have to go BACK and get it if I want to travel because of the new travel star their putting on US DL starting in October. You have to have it in order to travel. So that's another $20+, but oh wellz. It was nice to get it all done in one-day.

I sent mine in as well! I called yesterday to follow up and they said I should have it back any day now. It's a super quick process! At least for me it was. Good luck!
