Name Change

CourtneyBrittain, on June 28, 2019 at 7:14 PM Posted in Married Life 1 16
How long does it take to legally change your name? My fiancé and I are getting married August 8, 2019, and going on a cruise on October 13, 2019. If I get a passport now, with my maiden name, it will be void after I change my name on my license (from what I heard anyway). Is this true? I need to renew my passport, but we booked the cruise under my maiden name, and my license will have my maiden name until November unless I change it before it expires. I am fine paying the early fee for that, but my main two questions are
1) how long does it take approximately to legally change your name?
2) am I able to use a passport that says Courtney Maiden if my license says Courtney Married in the future? Thanks!

I'd just wait until after your honeymoon if everything is booked in your maiden name.
It took me about a month to get my certified marriage license then another week to wait for my new social security card, and now I'm still waiting on my drivers license to be mailed.
So it's been about 7 weeks for me just to get the main forms of IDs.

Also if you need to renew, a name change within a year will be free.

Yes! That’s what I plan on doing since we’re getting married in August but not going on our honeymoon until February. So, I’ll get my passport in my maiden name to match my documents and then change it to my married name after we get back from the honeymoon.

Have everything in your maiden name until after the honeymoon is the general advice given. It can take weeks if not months to change all the IDs over. You need everything to match to get boarded so just use the maiden and change it upon return. Most states allow a large amount of time to pass to change your legal name after marriage, I think where I live it's up to a year. So don't worry about it.

I agree- wait until you get back. I don't plan on legally changing mine until after our honeymoon in March 2020. I'll go by my married name of course at work or in places I can easily change it, but not on legal documents.

You're welcome. Changing your name is a hassle and I didn't want their to be any hang ups when it came to us traveling internationally.

I would wait until after your honeymoon. Passports take forever and your passport must match the name on your ticket. Your license doesn't matter if you have a passport, but if you lose your passport, it will be really tricky getting back home if you don't have a secondary form of ID to verify your identity. We got married on 8/11/2018 and our cruise left on 10/5/2019. I just waited until I got back and started the process in November. I still haven't applied for a new passport though.
