Name Change?

Clare, on February 5, 2024 at 2:11 PM Posted in Planning 0 3

Hi! I have a couple of questions about a name change.

I have a unique double name, (two words), that I really like, and would love to keep. I would like my last name to be my fiance's last name, but was considering joining my first and middle names to become one name, (i.e. Chiara Rose to Chiararose). Then, my middle name would be my maiden name.

I am getting married in AL, but will be living in another state.

I read in some places that I am not allowed to change my first name/middle name on the marriage certificate, but that I must petition the court to do so. If that is the case, what is the process? Do I drop my maiden name and adopt my husband's last name first, at the time of my wedding, then wait to legally change my first name until after I change my social security card, my drivers' license, and all other things? This would make it a long two step process, but I am not sure it that is necessary? I would really like some clarity on this, and would appreciate any help you have!

I would probably petition the whole name change rather than changing your name and then changing it again. I would check with the court, but I don’t believe you can change your first name through marriage, only last (and maybe middle since many women make their maiden name their middle name).

Yeah, that is what I think, too. I probably will just petition the whole name change with the court system in the new state in which I will be living, once I get married.

Then, I can get the SSA document, the drivers' license, and everything else changed, once I get the official court order with the name change.

The whole process will be longer than if I just dropped my maiden name and kept my double name the way it is (First Name, Middle Name, New Last Name), but I guess I have to work harder to get it the way I want it, (FirstName and Middle Name Combined in One Name, Maiden Name, and New Last Name) A girls gotta do what a girls gotta do! ☺

Would it be okay to do the legal name change only to change your middle name and last name, as is conventional but just use your current firstname+middlename socially? That social name would essentially be your nickname.
