Name change

Mercy, on November 27, 2020 at 8:46 PM Posted in Married Life 0 9
I got married 34 days ago and am finally looking over this name change stuff. Since Covid closed all of the social security offices I have to do the process by mail, and I have everything I need, but it says it needs a original copy of my proof of identity and the only thing I have is my drivers license, but I can’t put my drivers license in the mail I need it to drive... I’m sorry if this sounds stupid I’m just confused. Has anyone changed there name with there only proof of identity is there drivers license? It says no photocopy’s don’t I don’t get how I’m supposed to do it.

Do you have a birth certificate? That can work as well.

I was born in a different state then I currently live in. So I ordered a certified copy because my parents don’t know where my original one is and it’s supposed to come in the mail soon so I might have to wait then to even start the process.

Birth certificate works, as long as it’s the original. Honestly, I mailed my license in to change my name. I mailed it in on Monday, and received it back on Friday. I didn’t have a passport, or anything else to use.

I would wait for the birth certificate then. There isn't a rush for name changes. I started the process about 4-5 months after I got married.

I would not feel comfortable mailing in my birth cert.

I used my passport but my local SSA office in Maryland needed both my birth certificate AND another proof of identity. I mailed in my both my passport and birth certificate and received them back in the mail about 2 weeks later (I did mine last month). They did tell me that either my license or passport was needed as well though

I actually called my local SS office to see what their process was during covid. They actually only needed me to fill out the application and send a certified copy of my marriage certificate and that was it. I received my new social within a week. You may want to just call and ask.
