Name change

Ally, on November 1, 2020 at 1:19 PM Posted in Married Life 0 15
Anyone who hd changed their name in the past few months, about how long did it take? I submitted my social security card change the week of 9/20 and haven't received it back yet. My concern is that I am starting a new job soon, to which I applied for in my new name because I was told a social security person it would only take 3 weeks. Also mailed my documents so dont think I will be able to relax until they finally send them back. Just wondering if anyone has any experience on how long it took during Covid!

I'm in Maryland they received my application and documents 10/17. I received my documents back last Thursday and I received my new social security card yesterday. So it only took 2 weeks!

I feel like we talked about this before in another discussion, but did you have to send in any documents other than your marriage license and the application? I am also in MD but have been waiting to do social security because I didn't want to mail original documents.

Yes we have and yes! I mailed my original birth certificate, passport, the application, and a certified marriage certificate. I mailed everything certified and they sent my original documents back to me certified as well. They sent the social security card back regular mail. They received them 10/17 and I have everything back already!

I was also told 3 weeks, buy it took 9 weeks. I live in Illinois but I did get my papers back within a week so that was relieving. I can't wait to go stand in a 3-4 hour line Friday for my driver's license. I might just get there 2 hours before they open to try to beat the line.

That is so frustrating, I understand there may be a backlog but it should not take over two months to change the name on a card. I also know at the beginning of the pandemic you needed an appointment at the DMV so that couldve added a month to it but seems like thats not a thing anymore. By papers, do you mean the marriage certificate/application, and then the actual card took 9 weeks?

Yes, I submitted it all the moment I got our license back and it took 9 weeks from the day I sent it. It was frustrating. And I very much am not looking forward to waiting in the cold for my license

I got mine within 2 weeks, but I did get married at the end of February, right before everything started shutting down. One of my friends who recently got married said she was told 8-12 weeks when she changed her name b/c of COVID and how backed up the SSA was - she got married last month.

Oh yeah back in February/early March everything was still functioning like normal. It’s so frustrating i feel like I’ll be married a year before my name is changed. So depressing
