Name change/passport for honeymoon

Jennifer, on February 7, 2017 at 9:05 PM Posted in Planning 0 20

Is it bad I don't want to change my last name just because it seems like a giant pain the ass? (Just kidding-I do want to go the traditional route). But I was wondering what people did for those leaving the country for your honeymoon? Did you just leave every thing the same and changed your last name when you got back from your honeymoon?

I wouldn't mess with it until you come back, honestly. Your passport must match your ticket.

Yep that's actually exactly what you do, especially if you are leaving right after the wedding. Have to get your Social Security card changed before you can get your passport changed, or anything else really.

I'm not changing my name until after we return from our honeymoon. We are going to Italy and Switzerland.

It is honestly a pain to change it so do it when you have time and you have to change it with social security first!

We are going to Italy too! Details aren't etched in stone but we are likely to go a week after. Thank you everyone I think you're all absolutely right to not touch anything until after.

Unless you have at least four months in between your wedding and honeymoon, you should wait. And that's only the minimum.

-You need to obtain the certified copies of your marriage license, which can take 1-2 months (mine in AZ is up to 8 weeks. I'm on week 3).

-Then you need to send in your app to SS, which can take 2 weeks.

-Then you need to apply for a new passport (unless you obtained your passport within the year prior). That can take 4-6 weeks. You can't do this until you have your updated SS card.

-If you're not leaving the country and can wait for a passport, you need to go to the DMV and update your driver's license, which can take up to 2 weeks to process and deliver. (And again, you can't do this until you have the SS card).

ETA: Forgot to say, if you've already booked the flight, you would need to pay to update the name on the ticket, which can be about $200 I think.

It really depends where you live and when you are taking your honeymoon. We went on our honeymoon two months after our wedding. I changed my name and got my passport during that time. I got the certified copy of our marriage license the Monday after our wedding (Tennessee). That Tuesday I went to social security and changed my name and got my passport. It came within a month.

Wait to change everything if you're going on your honeymoon immediately.

I waited until we returned to change my name, made life a LOT easier! A TSA lady at the airport said I was smart to book my flight and everything under my maiden name!

If you're going within 4 months of your wedding, leave EVERYTHING until you come back (looks suspicious if your debit card is one name and passport another). If it's more than 4 months you have ample time to apply and receive your passport after changing your licenses and SSN. those usually have to be done first

ETA: if your flight is booked in your maiden name, your passport must match which is another reason not to change it yet. Most people book a few months in advance so you may be booking in maiden name.

I didn't change mine until after coming back, then mail in updated name change and they update the passport no extra cost as long as you do it within the year

Not changing mine legally until we get back, married in Oct, honeymoon in Dec. I really don't want to risk it. I'll deal with it afterwards.

We are legally marrying here two months before our ceremony out of the country. I am keeping my maiden name until we're back because I don't want to be stuck if the process takes too long. I'd rather be safe than sorry.

I'm not going on my honeymoon until three months after and decided to wait to change my name until after we get back. Just seems easier that way.

My DOC said that if you're going on a honeymoon that needs a passport after the wedding don't change your name until you get back.

I'm glad someone else wrote about this. I went to HR about insurance and direct deposit changing when I get back and she made it sound like it was so much easier to change her name during her divorce (I'm sure it's a completely different situation) but it threw me for a loop and honestly didn't know how to go about this. Changing it after seems to be the way to go for most of us!
