Name Changing Online-post-wedding To-do’s

Lauren, on August 2, 2019 at 4:22 PM Posted in Married Life 0 5
Now that I’m finally a Mrs. and the honeymoon is over, I wanted to know does anyone have any experience with changing their name using those online sites. I know this is WW, but The Knot has one. I want this to be a smooth process. Ideas?

I just went to the Social Security office in person and showed them my official marriage certificate, then to the DPS to change my name there.

You can set up appointments online or call ahead to help lessen the time you're there.

I heard mixed reviews about the online sites, but I think it isn't worth it in my opinion.

I looked into them to, and I don't think they're worth the price either. All they do is give you the forms and maybe fill some of them out, which isn't something I am willing to spend extra cash on when the actual process is completely free. You still have to go to places and such, so it doesn't take all the work away from you. Basically, as previous poster said, you have to change your name with SS first. Once you get the new card, you can change your driver's license. From there is everything else (passport, work ID, bank accounts, Netflix subscription, etc.).

From my understanding they only gather the forms for you but you still have to do most of the legwork.
Honestly it wasnt hard to do it on my own. The worst part was the waiting for documents to clear before moving on the the next.

Honestly, I consider them a waste of time an energy. If you plan things right, you can knock out the SS number and drivers license in 1-2 days (depending on the state).

We received our marriage certificate back from the officiant. So that Monday, we filed the certificate and got our certified copy. We immediately went to the SS office and I got my new number. In PA, they let me use the SS office receipt for the driver's license. So, that same day I could have also gotten the license updated. But my husband and I wanted to spend or second day married mainly enjoying the day out together. So I went to get the license changed over the next day after work.

It took me two days, about a total of 3 hours of my life to change my name for free. I think it was worth not spending the money. After that SS number came in the mail, my bank took maybe 15 minutes... work was the only pain. And I don't think the forms would have helped in that process.

I (semi)joke that it was trickier to disentangle myself from Facebook than to legally change my name!
