Name changing ssa in nj

Alyssa, on November 13, 2019 at 1:17 PM Posted in New Jersey Planning 0 5

Hey, quick question for anyone that may know, as I'm getting conflicting answers. Do you have to go to the SSA office in person to change your name on your SS card? or can you do it via the mail? Thanks!

I believe it varies by state. In my state, you can do either. However, I am choosing to go in person for a couple of reasons. 1- the paperwork they have you fill out is pretty personal and I don’t really want to send that via the USPS and risk it getting into the wrong hands. 2- if you mail it, you don’t get the certified copy of your marriage license back. If you go in person, you do. I would check what the laws in your state are to verify though.

NJ resident here! You can do either one. I preferred in person because I didn't want to send those personal documents through the mail. Honestly, I was in and out of the SS office way faster than the MVC. I went a bit before they opened and they were already taking people. The whole process took about 15 minutes. I got my new card in the mail exactly a week later (went on a Monday and got it the next Monday). Also, they give you documentation so you cam get your license changed before getting the new card in the mail.

No problem! Just make sure you bring the form with you! You can download it from the SSA website. The office I went to did not have copies of any forms out in the waiting area, so if you didn't bring it with you, you were out of luck.
