Name on Marriage License Is Wrong!

Lauren , on November 8, 2018 at 11:39 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 4

After getting married on Saturday, our officiant told us that my name on our marriage license is wrong. Somehow, it managed to print out with my husbands last name instead of my my maiden name (of course the clerk didn't catch this for some strange reason -- and I didn't know otherwise). i've called the courthouse so that they are aware and they said they would mail out a new certificate to our priest. Hasn't happened either time. And the priest has already mailed in the original which they haven't received yet. So basically, my big question is, what types of issues will this cause in the future? I'm trying my best to get it fixed but I'm getting nowhere. Will I still be able to change my last name or will I have issues?

Honestly, I wouldn't go off the answers you get here. Consult the courthouse and ask them.

Question though: did you not look over it when you got it? The clerk who issued ours made us check the info 3 times because she said once it was submitted we couldn't change it (but this might not be the situation with you cause each county/state is different).

The application was constructed very poorly. it had a "last name" field and a "surname" field. I wrote my maiden name as the surname and his last name as the last name. So when we looked the application over, in my mind, it was all correct (application was done online, not in the office). I can't believe the clerk didn't catch it since both of the last names were the same on it. Stupid mistake yes, but I didn't know any better and was given no information prior about it.

Also, they said that everything is right in the system but it didn't print out right. Ugh.

If you get a certificate with the wrong information, you can get the certificate corrected with the information that's supposed to be on it. They should *want* you to have the right information. When we got our marriage certificate, it had the wrong wedding date on it and had our officiant's name wrong (idk how). We just had to submit a request in writing to the state office (since we got married in a different place than we live in) and they sent us a new one within a week.
