Name Wrong on ssn Card

Ally, on November 17, 2020 at 1:22 AM Posted in Planning 0 13
So I just received my SSN documents back after TWO MONTHS of waiting, and they spelled my middle name wrong by one letter!!! I am livid since I have been waiting for this to come back so I can start a new job in my new name, and definitely cannot wait another two months for a card. And of course the offices are still not open cause of Covid. Does anyone know how much importance is put on the middle name on the SSN card, especially at the DMV? I’ve read a couple of websites saying they only really care that first and last name is correct. I’m soooo upset because I meticulously made sure everything was filled out right on my end and they still screwed up, delaying an already slow name change.

    Ooof, that's awful.

I'd be concerned, but I think that's because I live in NJ, and the DMV/MVC here is a pit of despair. Let's put it this way: I warned DH multiple times that getting his ID in NJ was going to be a pain of epic proportions, he should do it sooner rather than later, he should have MULTIPLE forms of their "point system", and he should absolutely NOT wait until his old ID was expired.

He did ALL of those things, and then someone at the NJ DMV decided that his name was really not his name, because of a little hyphen on his birth certificate.

    It was a Thing.

    So.

    Depends on your state?

I would really reach out to someone at the SSN office, AND your local DMV.

Yeah i am in NJ too...The DMV is ALWAYS a pain but this pandemic has just made everything sooo much more complicated. Apparently you do not need the physical SSN card to change the name so I am hoping they will just be able to look it up and not notice the one letter is wrong. Regardless I am beyond pissed someone actually made this mistake

I mean, they've gotten my height wrong... and told me it didn't matter... for my main form of ID... and I'm SHORT, I fought for that inch!!

I don't blame you, it's the most basic thing - check the spelling!
... good luck with the MVC. May the odds be ever in your favor.

In my state, it would be important. After hearing so many nightmares about the SS Process, it makes me feel reassured that I'm not changing my name at all.

Unfortunately, it’s gonna need to be fixed. Can you still get this job & than fix the name again once it’s corrected?

Oh it's definitely a thing, that is for sure!
My first middle (I have 2 middle names) name is spelled incorrectly on my social security card, it is supposed to be spelled Stephenie but instead is spelled Stephanie. So everything involving my name has to be spelled the way it is on my social security card, even though on my birth certificate it is spelled the way it is supposed to be. It has been a battle my whole life, so I would definitely get it corrected.

But have you ever had an issue with getting a job/updating driver license anything like that since it’s spelled wrong? At this point I just want to finish my name change but now I’m afraid it’s gonna take them months to send me the corrected one again

I haven't had any issues with it, just moreso annoying due to the fact of my birth certificate saying one spelling and my social security card saying another and always being told that they will have to go by the incorrect spelled one.

I would call them and let them know that they've made a mistake. Have them relook at your application so they can see that it was a clerical error
