That's the most popular choice. Thanks for sharing. A bit dissappointed you blocked me over saying "gee wiz." Didn't realize what I said was so offensive. My apologies.

I proposed this idea to my FH about creating a new last name. He responded "that's for rich elites, not us." And laughed. That was his nice way of saying "no."

I think it's a great idea to create a new last name

That may be true, but I know quite a few women who’ve done it that way.

So by you knowing women who've done it that way makes it less long for you?

No. By me knowing women who’ve done it, I know that the length is not particularly bothersome.

My husband and I went back and forth on this. Neither of us have a real connection to our last names. My dad's father wasn't really in the picture, so the last name only stems back a generation. Also, my husband learned a few years back that his dad isn't his biological dad and he lived with just his mom most of the time, so we weren't really tied to that last name. We were going to create a new last name, but then couldn't decide on one. We decided to stick with his dad's last name to avoid anyone getting upset. Since then, I've felt like we've made the last name our own and will route the name in our own little family.

Oh wow. I could never make a big decision like that based on whether I'm upsetting others or not when that decision is only impacting me and my spouse.

    To each their own.

    Thanks for sharing your expierence.

Well if we had thought of a good one that we both liked, it would have been different lol. All-in-all, it is just a name and we can make it our own through a few generations.

My perspective is different. The phrase "It's just a name," I don't have the privilege to think that way. My ancestors were slaves. We were not considered human and were LEGALLY property. People from my culture still have the last name of our most recent slave master. Since we were property, our names which is our identity were discarded and our language taken from us.

Yes, you can make ot your own. Best wishes to you and your future spouse!

I took my husband's last name. We got married on a Saturday. Monday I went to the courthouse to turn in our marriage license and get our certified copies & went to the Social Security Office to legally change my name. Wednesday I went to the DMV to get my new license & Friday my new social security card arrived in the mail at my house. In less than week after my wedding I had my name changed on everything Smiley xd

Very cool for you. A woman taking her husband's name after marriage is the most common practice. I'll be keeping my name.

Not changing my name, didn't really see any good reason to do it.
