Navy blue and black clash

Mrs. in May, on January 27, 2015 at 12:19 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 14

So I need some advice.

My FH really wants to wear a black tux/suit, I would normally be perfectly ok with this except that our wedding colors are navy blue, green, and light blue. I really do not want black and navy blue to clash and there is nothing else black anywhere in our wedding. I have suggested a navy blue suit/tux, grey, or tan/brown and he will just not budge. I don't want to be a bridezilla, but I want things to look nice. Any other advice or suggestions?

Is he as stuck on the black tux as he is with the navy blue? Any chance you could convince him to change the color of the tux, like a grey instead? Blue and grey look great together. If that's not an option, perhaps see if he would be up to maybe a lighter shade of blue. Good luck!

Yup! Black tux matches everything, especially when you're the groom. Give him a colorful tie and or pocket sqaure and your done!

I think your fine. My colors are navy blue and kiwi green. The blue in this pic is more of a royal blue, but still close. It will look great!

I think navy blue and black look very good together. A black tux is very classic. I do think dark grey would look sharp, but not quite as formal. Maybe see if he will try both on, and bring one of the bm dresses to see what it looks like together. But let him wear black if that's what he likes more.

I agree with the majority, a black tux will be just fine. Smiley smile

I'm with you. It seems like he will stick out. I mean he's supposed to stick out b/c he's the groom but it doesn't seem like it will be in a good way.

You can have him in a black suit, and his tie and vest be white. The groomsman can wear blue and green vests/ties. That way he matches you Smiley smile

I actually thing that navy blue tuxes/suits would be MORE of a problem than black. There is so much variation in shades of blue that it could look like you tried to match the guys to the girls and missed. You might be better off going with black so that it looks deliberate.

I have also been in... umm... 4 weddings where the gal's dresses were navy or dark blue and the guys were in black suits. It looked nice to me.

Yep navy with a black tux works out just fine. I have done do many weddings and proms with those colors. To me is more of a formal look over the other colors.

I was in the same postion as you. With navy blue dresses, I wanted dark gray tuxes... black tuxes actually do look ok with navy blue (google it) but it is a very heavy look, and if I wanted to do that, I'd just do all black. FH hated the idea because he believes the only color for tuxes is black. I dug my heels in, threw a bridezilla fit, and won. I'll warn you, dark gray tuxes are few and far between.

Whatever you do, do not do navy suits or tuxes. I guarantee it will be just enough different than whatever else is navy blue (BM dresses?) and it will look awful. You'd be better off with black.

Personally, I think the black would look the best and doesn't clash and also that if it's important to your FI, who is a grown man and should be allowed to wear what he wants, it's not worth fighting over.

But if you are married to charcoal/dark grey, we used this tux from Mens Wearhouse and it looked great on everybody and lots of people actually commented on how nice the tuxes were, so you may want to run it by your FI. Because as @Jess said, your options for charcoal will be few and far between.

I'm worrying about the same thing. My colors are navy and light pink. My fiancé wants to wear a black suit, not grey. I suggested that he wear black and his groomsmen wear grey, and showed him pics of bridal parties with that combo - but he wants to match his groomsmen.

Black and navy blue do not match, black does not match brown either in case anyone was wondering! I would def push for grey suits. Sorry this is a huge pet peeve of mine.
