Necessary for us. I think they're nice and I like the idea of sending them out so our guest's interest is piqued and so they know to expect an invitation in the following months.

We were 100% not going to get any since I had shared the date on social media and thought all our friends/family knew - then had people who aren't on social media (who are definitely invited) asking for the date again...between that and the large quantity of out-of-town guests (1-2 hours), we are mailing out StDs this week!

It depends. We did digital save the dates because we wanted to give the heads up for our destination wedding.

Totally unnecessary expensive. It you want them go for it, but i'd rather not have that cost and use the money on something else

No! Just send invites early enough. Plus nobody keeps these things, don't waste money.

When we first decided to do a destination wedding we sent out text messages to those who we were going to invite to give them a heads up. I sent out my invitations on Appy couple right before New Years for our May 27th wedding.

I did send save the dates because we are getting married on a Friday and, most likely, people will have to take time off of work

Absolutely necessary for our wedding! We have a lot of out-of-town guests and we’re getting married on a Sunday. We sent them out 10 months in advance.

    Unnecessary for us.

We did our wedding invites as an event on Facebook, which provided the link for everyone to RSVP on our wedding website. Having everyone RSVP online let us instantly know when someone decided to come (including any kids or +1's) and we did not need to wait weeks or months for people to mail back their RSVP card. Also, having everyone in one facebook event means that anything that needs to be communicated to all of the guests can be done so quickly and easily.

Surprisingly, Save the Dates are expensive, and with everything digital now, there was no need for us to waste several hundred dollars sending out Save the Dates or even invites. The money we saved can go towards a better photographer, videographer, honeymoon airfare, or even something fun like a photobooth.

I think it all depends on the type of wedding (local vs destination) and your guest list (many out of town guests or mostly local guests). In my case, it was absolutely necessary as my wedding is almost a DW... Over 50-60% of the people that are going (including me, the bride) are from another place and need to
book flights, hotel, ask for vacation time, etc. I’d say if it’s a small wedding only including family members and people that live nearby, then you can skip the save the dates and save some money.

Save the Dates are awesome. My fiancée and I plan our vacations way in advance. If I don’t have a card in the mail from you MANY months in advance, I may not be able to attend. I can only take so many days off work each year. If I’ve already requested my vacation days for the year, I may not be able to take extra days on just a couple months notice. If I’ve already booked and paid for a vacation, and it collides with your date, I’m going to miss your wedding. Please send me an STD notice. Life is hectic. Advance notice is a big help.

That's great! That's a good amount of time for them to plan and book their travel!
