We are doing a donut wall and donut cake to cut into! Half the price of the base price of a wedding cake! And it's different!

We went back and forth on this. Cakes are a huge expense and neither of us really likes cake anyway...but it's not really about us, right? It's about being good hosts to our guests! In the end, we decided to go with an assortment of desserts and will skip the cake, cutting, and smashing.

Necessity to go with all the other traditional stuff we're doing lol. I don't even like cake that much but the cake cutting is something we're doing

For me: yes. Now I don't think it has to be super extravagant or expensive but I've never seen a wedding without one so I'm married to the concept lol

We're not big cake people, but to please our guests and to cut a cake, we decided to do a small, 3 tier (feeds 60) cake. We're also doing cupcakes and a small grooms cake (the only cake we really like) as well. We're getting our cake and cupcakes at Sam's for about half the price of bakery cakes.

Not necessary. We will have one because FH has a real sweet tooth, I don't eat cake, so it will be a fun thing for him to create and eat (with my oversight of course, haha). We will also have a dessert station for guests.

Cupcakes all the way! I love that it provides more flavor variety and costs a lot less.

No. I personally don't like cake, and all the guests want the cake cutting ceremony to be over so they can go party. And if my FH smashed cake into my face I would probably not have a sense of humor about it. We're just having cupcakes and people can go get one if they want to.

Good point! I feel like there are other alternatives, but I'm the same way! I want the cake!

NECESSARY! I think my guests would stage a revolt if there was no cake, haha. Though my groom would probably be happier with a pie.

We want a cake but we decided to go with a small cake for the pictures and the cutting and then give all of our guests cupcakes. It's more cost efficient for us and easier to serve because they can grab their own and we don't have to worry about getting someone to cut up a huge cake

I think it depends on the bride and groom, and if they really want it. Some people might want to save money and skip it, some people might want to customize it to show their personalities. My fiance and I want to do a birch log cake, but instead of it being tiered, looking like a real log on a table. We both grew up in a really rustic area, and he has always been extremely passionate about the outdoors. But if others want to do a dessert table that fits them much better, then they should.
Also no to cake smashing. I think that's something that ends up ruining the day and sours the start of a beautiful marriage.

I don't like cake! But I love the cupcake place in towns red velvet cupcakes with cream cheese frosting, so we may do a cupcake tower instead.

In my opinion there are a couple of occasions where cake is mandatory, weddings and birthdays.
